BIGGEST FULL MOON THIS YEAR TODAY!

A

arcticsun

Dec. 9, 2008: No, you can not see Neil Armstrong's footprint. But go ahead and look: The full Moon of Dec. 12th is the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year.

It's no illusion. Some full Moons are genuinely larger than others and this Friday's is a whopper. Why? The Moon's orbit is an ellipse with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other: diagram. In the language of astronomy, the two extremes are called "apogee" (far away) and "perigee" (nearby). On Dec. 12th, the Moon becomes full a scant 4 hours after reaching perigee, making it 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we've seen earlier in 2008.

GO OUT AND SEE IT TONITE IF YOU CAN GUYS, ITS FANTASTIC!!

i spent all nite out yesterday in the most amazing moonlight ever, took loads of pictures but it was really cold so most of them became blurry. ill upload some pics, give me a moment tho the upload is slow as hell.

oh and by the way, would be awesome if we could see some pictures of the full moon from all over the world.

:jump: It was gorgeous. I was smoking a jay as I left work and there it was!

Pure entertainment - I loved how it appeared to dance as I drove down the winding, twisting road home.

im so pissed off, because i bought this new expencive camera, and i havent really learned how to use it. so these pics doesnt make the moon any justice. all out of focus, and kinda foggy, sorry about that. too tired now to go out again to take more shots, maybe tomorrow. it was so large and so clear we could clearly see the craters and such with the naked eye. also the terrain was lit up almost like daylight. no need for flashlights at all.

Ever see the moon low in the horizon and it looks gigantic?
It is the very same size it is when it's high in the sky, and what we are witnessing is an illusion of the highest order.
It is one of the most clear examples of how our minds eye works.
Think that's bullshit? Measure it....hold your hand out at arms length when it looks huge and see how far across it is in relationship to your finger or thumb. Now wait till it looks small high in the sky, and measure it the same way. It will be the exact same measure as you took when it looked fantastically huge.
Pure illusion.

BTW....that last pic made me sick!
The only chick looks like she has her shit hung in her big crack.

Yes, when at perigee the moon is actually larger to our view. The 14% surprises me, but it is definitely bigger. But that doesn't detract from the point I was making, arcticsun.
The moon even at perigee, and 14% larger looking, will also appear much larger when on the horizon than it does high in the sky.
The illusion that I speak of exists no matter what position the moon is in relationship to the earth. The illusion part has to do with it being on the horizon, and our perception of it's size.
