It's due to the amount of oxygen getting to the roots. When you water in soil as well as feeding nutes and water you're also pushing out stale air and sucking in fresh air which is why we water from the top. Now if your soil is waterlogged this doesn't happen for a long time and the roots are starved of oxygen, also wet soil with no roots or dead roots and no drying out will become anaerobic (no oxygen) and sour sometimes giving off a sulphur smell.

No such worries in hydro as there's lots of oxygen getting to roots as well as water.

Hey, Sticky,

Don't feel bad. Took me a while to wrap my head around the idea too. Med's explanation is spot on. The only thing I'd add is that DWC likes cool water, 65º-70º. Cool water holds more oxygen. And as we all now know, flooding with oxygen is the key.

Great answer! makes perfect sense now! thanks MED!

freez - in dwc... does the plant like that better than other hydros because it is constantly getting air and nutes ? i ask because it seems that the flood and drain types seem to be using more equipment that may not be necessary. what are the benefits of using one over the other?

I think its more a matter of preference.....

I run RDWC and its a breeze. Ph stays stable, roots get plenty to drink and the growth rates are AMAZING!!!!

Peace

These have been vegging about 2.5 weeks....

While I believe a single DWC plant will out grow a single E&F, I have to second HydroFarmers, "I think its more a matter of preference....." Grower personality is huge. Let's pretend you like SOG; E&F would probably be the better way. Note also, a system can be as simple or complicated as you'd like. My F&D was a tub over a plastic gas can attached to an airpump. Then I saw root porn and ScROG. My DWC is one tub with two airstones.

To best answer your question, you need to determine what kind of garden you're thinking of. 2 feet x 2 feet or 20 feet x 20 feet? 1 plant or 100? 1 strain or 12? Trees, SOG, ScROG? Are you there everyday? Do you ever take off for weeks at a time?

I'd start with the lamp or the room/cab. One will pretty much dictate the other and everything else falls out from there.
