Heat vents in the grow room!

Ok heres what im lookin at... I have a bedroom that has 2 heat vents on the floor in it. I have the house thermostat on 68degrees. So in when the lights are off, the temp will not drop far below 68. However, when the lights are on, the heat still comes out of them, making the room hotter. The thermostat is on the wall in the living room, so whenever the living room gets chilly, the vents in my room also blow hot air which makes my temp controller turn the intake and outtake fans on like every 5 or 10 minutes instead of every 30min, which i prefer. So is there some kind of timed damper i can hook up to the house ducting in the basement right before that vent? I wanna time it, so its open at lights off, but closed during lights on. This has to be a common problem around here since a good percentage of u grow in a room with a heating/cooling vent.

I have only turned on the veg room lights to get a feel for how the temp situation was gonna work. I got 4800watts in flower, and 1600 in veg, and the outtakes for both rooms exhaust into the living room area where the thermostat is, so im kind of hoping once all the lights are running, that the rooms will act as heaters (even tho they are cooled lights) for the living area, preventing the thermostat to go on so often. Since the rooms are set to exhaust when 72.5degrees is exceeded, and since the thermostat for the house is set at 68 degrees, do you think this will be enough to keep the heater from turning on? Help me guys thx!

Cover the vents.

With that kind of wattage you better have some kind of AC system other than the one built into your house.

Unless of course you have aircooled hoods and are venting outside. Even then the ducting will put off some heat.

If it truly gets too cold in there you can put a small heater in the room. It will only kick on when it is really too cold.

Mainly what I'm saying is it's much easier to control the temp in that room if you cut if off from the rest of the house. With a cab you definitely can regulate cab temp through house temp.

You're going to cook yourselves. Unless it gets REALLY cold where you are that's a whooooole lotta heat. I would definitely do a couple of test runs before putting anything in that room but free bagseed with no work involved.

Make sure you can maintain proper temps throughout the whole house before investing too much time.

all hoods are cooled, and i dont use a/c unit in the winter time, i just hook my intake fans up to the great outdoor winter air and kazaaam, free air conditioning!
Thanks for the tip. Now that i think about it, if i covered up that vent, i cant really see those rooms getting too much colder than the ambient temp of the whole house... but i would prolly still put a heater in the rooms. Whats the best kind that dont have red hot coils just waiting to burn down the grow? And would i need a temp controller unit for it, or could i just use the dial on the heater itself? Is that a reliable option? thx

I have basically the same problem myself. If you cover the vents the room will get much cooler than the rest of your house during lights off. At least in my house it does. What I did was go by some magnetic vent covers and I simply put them on the vents during lights on take them off when lights go off.

Also they make the portable heaters pretty high quality now. They are almost impossible to start fires with unless you put something in front of it. I would still take extra precaution with mounting it or putting some 5/8 drywall underneath it. Not sure if you are aware but those electric heaters are electric hogs. Most have settings on them for 800 Watts and 1500 Watts.

Yes, heaters are big hogs and usually require a little used circuit in the house.

Just cover the vents, keeps the room cool at night, good for bringing out the purple in any strains that have it in them.

Cold temps do bring out the purple in my strains, and increase resin production, but the overall yield suffers a lil because of this.
As far as covering and removing the vents daily, its not an option. I will only be visiting this place 2-3 times per week max! so i guess im gettin some heaters.

Hell ya that thing is awesome! I was wondering how much it is. And also, i have 2 rooms that need controlled, is there an option for two units and one reciever?
I can see getting away with one possibly, but it woudlnt be perfect. I would have to obviously put it in the flower room since that room has no light/heat for the most time. But even if i timed the 18/6 veg room schedule to be off at the same time as the flower room, that still leaves me with 6 hours of lights on in veg and (which means heat will come out of register), because the thermostat in the flower room is still heating the house cuz the lights are still off. Do you follow me?

I believe you can do 3-4 zones on one thermostat. Cost is about $350

For my rooms I usually just close them day and night. The room might get a little chilly in the night, but it shouldn't get too cold as to cause a problem. May be check how low the temperature goes in the night with the vents closed and see if it is acceptable. Just keep in mind the night time temepratures can get as low as 15 degree's celcius and even cooler without causing any ill effects. Actually I prefer cool night time temperatures, it seems to be good for the plants, at least within reason. If your night temps get too low for comfort, then you could always manually open and close the vents if that is a possiblilty. Just my 2 cents.

I forgot to add one thing. It is important in larger grows to have negative pressure in the grow room to contain the smell, but also to pull air in from other rooms. If you have a carbon scrubber creating negative pressure in the room you will also pull in cool air from other parts of the house through structural leaks or a passive intake and hot air will be expelled through the scrubber. Just thought I would mention this as it is important to maintain proper temps as well as contain smell while using a homes central air or its furnace.
