Root rot normally happens the most in hydro when your temps in your water is too warm or not enough oxygen to your roots causing them to die and bacteria grows...... your plants will look like they are wilting, your roots need to be pearl white, sometimes nutrient stains the roots, but you can tell the difference between brown root rot and nutrient stain and the smell can give it away sometimes too.
It will happen a lot less in soil, your soil would have to be saturated all the time in order for root rot to set in.......
damping off can happen to seedlings smaller plants... but as they get older and have a defense against the fungi you won't see it anymore as they get older, they will just end up showing wilting from being over watered......
We need more info though, are you growing in soil or hydro?

ya i was growing in soil and i smelt the roots and they had a strong odor.
I ended up throwing out the plant because a fungus started growing on top of the soil and i didnt want it to end up transfering to the other plants. even though it had shown signs of recovery I didnt have any way of getting rid of the mold without affecting the plant. The roots were also brown although some of the brown might have come from the biobizz nutes I use.

How often/much are you watering? What size container are you growing in? Are you using Peralite with soil mix? What type of grow room/cabinet are you using? Do your plants have adequate drainage?
In dirt you should only water your plants when they need it. In my experience it is best to determine this by weight, pick up your plant immediatley after you water it.... remember the weight. This is heaviest your plant should feel (immediatley after watering.) Remember your plant will tell you everything you need to know about its health. (Leaves "saluting" the lights... doing great, leaves pointing down or looking sad... needs some help) The next day pick it up and judge the weight again, and again the next day and again the next day ...(and so on and so forth) When the plant feels lighter (be smart... be conservative with watering) water soon, if it feels lightweight and the leaves are pointing down (away from light) Water Now. 1 thing to remember when watering is to give the water to the plant slowly, not all at once, allow the water to absorb into the soil slowly. I usually break my feedings with soil in half (if its 1 gallon per plant per feeding, I will break that down into 2 1/2 gallon feedings in 5 min per plantper feeding) this way the dirt (and roots) are able to better absorb the water and nutrients.

Now those plants look really nice!!!! Nice big green water leaves. Nice Job you should be proud of those lil girls.
