How do buds form?

Hey, it's my first grow and never seen how buds form. I've been looking around and searching in the forums but can't really find any threads on this question.
I know I can wait it out for my girls to bud but yea, I've just been curious.

What I wanna know is will the bud sites grow and connect (like the gaps filling in) to each other (see pic below)? and just a general question for other newbies like me that might have the same question... how do buds form?

I always expected the buds to grow upward, but they don't. The buds fill in from the bottom.

petemoss - when you say fill in from the bottom you mean the lower buds grow to meet the higher ones, or the higher buds grow down due to gravity or something and meet the lower ones? a little bit of both?

maryj315 - I wish there was a BUD FAIRY lol, somthing like the tooth fairy, but you leave a seed under a pot n next day BAM!

He means the bottom of the bud grows an slowly pushes the top of the bud up, like how mountians are formed. Soon enough youll see for yourself.
