Yeah, I'm with Ickis on thiso ne, it all about timing, plants put outside at the wrong time will bud, reveg, bud, reveg, etc. wasting energy, but plants put outside at the right time from a room with a light cycle corresponding at least vaguely to the amount of daylight hours will just grow. Very big.
Peace and Love, thanks for this informative thread, kinda helped me organise the memories and experiences in my head and come to this conclusion!

Stop putting anything out before June 1. In fact I put most of my stuff outside after June 15. The biggest thing to me is having the indoor lights on 16 hrs and off 8 hrs. Because in June there is 15 hours of daylight and when you stick them out it won't trigger them or slow them down trying to keep vegging. If you do 24 hrs light and stick them out you will slow them down for 3 weeks or so until they start vegging properly again.

.

What if the longest day is only 14,5 hours? (southern atmosphere)

High Moppel. I think the key is to not veg the plants at a substantially longer light period than your outdoor light cycle. Where(latitude) you live, also greatly determines when you can plant. If the longest day where you live is 14.5 hrs long, then I can assume that you live around the 35 parallel(S). I wouldn't put them out before Nov. 1, and I would use a 14/10 veg cycle to start them; assuming your starting under lights. If starting from seed outside you can start a month earlier; weather permitting. Just my 2 cents.

Any dissenting opinions please jump in.

Not if starting from seed. If using clones they will sometimes show preflowers, and their internodal spacing may be altered somewhat. This is dependent on strain and the light cycle that they were under previously.

In nature the vast majority of drug cultivars occur within 30-35 deg of the equator. At these latitudes the longest days of the year are approximately 14-14.5 hrs respectively. At 10 deg latitude the longest day is +/- 12.5 hrs. And at the equator its 12hrs everyday of the year.

Most varieties that I have grown respond very strongly to any lengthening of the dark period; even the sativas. particularly if they are on an extended day period light cycle (i.e.18/6-24/0).
The key is to keep them in the veg stage by assuring that when you put them outside they aren't stunted by wanting to flower because of an increased dark period.

By the way, very nice gallery.

Dang, Ive been busy for a couple of weeks and this thread has turned into a good discussion.

Like KMK, I have a schedule that I have settled on and never changes. I start my seedlings on April 1, to be transplanted outdoors 3 -4 weeks later and usully, the last 2 weeks of that has been spent outside during the day under natural day length schedules. This is even more important for femmed seeds.

Its my conclusion that this regime is the most anygrower can do to help the plants. Getting them past the seedling stage so that they are less susceptable to snails and cutworms is all that can be accomplished.

I root clones on 24 hrs of light and then transfer them to natural light and natural light schedules as soon as theyre taken from the cloner and placed into soil.

Hey mopel, clones arent risky in my view. I use them all the time. Lately, it seems that im only cloning femmed seeds but as long as the enviroment is kept stable, Ive never seen a male flwoer. In fact, ive gotten to where Ill order 3 or 5 femmed seeds, pop a couple, find the best plant and turn that rascal into 20 plants. Clone away moppel.

How do you start your seeds in the ground?

How do you start your seeds in the ground?

Do you pre-soak and/or scuff the seeds

Do you just prep your holes and plant a single seed?

Do you plant multiple seeds per hole and thin them?

Do you use any kind of protection for the seedlings? ie plastic cup collars, steel wool, anti snail/slug chems, fence etc?

Roughly what is the plant loss when starting seeds outdoors in the ground? 5% 10% 25% 50% 75% or more?

Do you check them in the first couple weeks and re-plant if they got eaten/killed/died?
