there is 20-25% perlite in the soil, and i have no idea why its all clumpy like that. why is it bad to transplant into a clear container? should i paint the clear ones?

also, i think my main problem has been ph. i just posted this in my grow diary:

so i went to walmart today and got some bromothymol blue... to test for ph, and that stuff will only measure between 6.0 and 7.4 i believe. well i tested my tap water that ive been using, and it was as blue as blue can be... which means 7.4+. anyone know how reliable this stuff is? that would explain the trouble i've been having right?

so in that case, how should i remedy the problem? can i just squeeze some lemon juice in there? if so, how much should i do to balance out the problem? or should i just flush? thanks anyone who's watching.

LGH: Yeah, just try to keep the roots intact.

Bedlam: Clear is bad for 3 main reasons:
#1 It allows algae to grow
#2 When roots are exposed to light, they stop growing.
#3 People have always said that it can cause hermies. I've never tested that one though.

I'll get back to you tomorrow on the pH if no one else answers you. I've had a long day
and I'm pretty wiped out.

daaaaaamn. so i flushed four out of the eight. started with water around 6.0, all the
run off was 7.6+ at first, got it to about 6.5.
does that mean the soil is still way higher than 6.5?

Well...........if your tap water is testing at over 7.6, what it probably means is that your soil pH is a little on the acidic side. Personally, I would buy some distilled water at the drug store, start mixing it 50-50 with tap water and add some Epsom salt to that.

I don't know if lemon juice will lower your pH effectively. I've heard of people using it, but I've also heard of people using vinegar and vinegar sucks.

Bedlam, Don't know if this has anything to do with your problems, but do you remember what brand of perlite you're using? Miracle Grow perlite has nutes mixed in. If this is the case, your soil may be too hot for the young'uns.

also, here are some shots:

these plants are hungry for nutes, correct? I can't feed them until my soil is thoroughly dry, but I'm pretty sure they do. do they need anything besides NPK?

i wood almost swear that the soil in that last pic looks like the dirt in my yard....... if you paid for that was it called just TOPSOIL or was it a potting mix?
