Do strange colors indicate anything other than beauty?

Been reading through the purple strain post, and I was just wondering... Some people said in there that purple plants are not as potent, are there any colors other than green or purple that indicate anything other than just looking good? I'm trying to find a strain that is foremost exotic looking, followed by potency, followed by yield. I remember seeing pictures in high times of pink and blue and orange bud, but it looked extremely photoshopped.

Also, I've seen ICmag members talking about strains whose beans are not for sale, but free. I'm not soliciting for trading beans as I know that's against the rules, but what exactly does this mean? From a friend only? Cuz I have no friends.... haha kidding, but none that grow. :joint:

Nice post bedlam and an interesting question aswell, from what I've seen and smoked purple or green or whatever the hell colour it is it does not change a thing. From experience growing and drying and doing cures with homegrown I've noticed that well cured buds will start to take on a glowing golden hue after there well cured and there is a certain colour shift after the whole process, but as far as representing any difference in psychoactivity I've found none. I've read alot of stuff about purple strains and there flavours etc. but one thing I found interesting was that after a certain change in plants (genetically or from weather) the purple that appears is a representation of a chemical change that creates something called anthocyanin, in bluberries theres anthocyanin aswell and its known to be anti-carcinogenic ,so it may pose as a health benefit to be smokin' purps, although smoking a bunch of purple cannot be compared to eating a bucket of blueberries they both have anthocyanin. as far as trading beans go just hook someone up with some beans and you'll probably be trading with them soon after. good luck with the strain hunt and as for exotic imo look into landrace strains from all over the world I'd say there all exotic in there own way.

Strange colors for me, indicates that I need to slow down.
Seriously... or that someone slipped me a mickey finn!

I don't know that there's going to be any kind of general/hard & fast rule as regards multicolored plants, for starters because different factors can produce coloration: for instance, nitrogen deficiencies can cause intense purples and reds to develop sometimes - while a purple or red coloration in another plant can simply be genetic. Unless you know the reason the plant is showing these colors, their mere existence doesn't mean much.

On that note - I've always wanted to see a picture of the Hothouse Flowers' Haze, since its coloration is somewhat legendary...

purple doesnt necessarily mean less potent, the problem is that when breeding, potency may take a backseat to other traits that are being bred for, such as the purple colored buds

lighter colored buds - light green to yellow tend to smoke better

Never understood the craze of purple plants. Sure they are pretty but the smoke when compared to most green plants isnt up to par. This is just my opinion of course, but never could understand why people like them so much

Botany

Greetings;

Speaking as a Botanist, there are a few reasons plants change colors and they mostly come down to about the same causation.

Any plant be it it a bush or a tree has to transport nutrients throughout its structure, when that process is lessened by either cold temperatures or lack of nutrients being transported through cambium and phloem of the plant we see a change in the colors mostly of the leaves.

We see this most strikingly in fall when deciduous plants [ones that lose their leaves in fall and winter] enter autumn and begin to get very cold, this restricts the VASCULAR system of the plant and we see chlorophyl give way to other cyanins and flavinoids which produce color.

It also changed the flavors of things because of the different chemicals that are present.

here is some excerpts and a link:

Why do tree leaves change color in the fall?
The simple answer is that, during summer, chlorophyll in the leaves is so densely green that it hides the yellow and orange colors of other chemical compounds that are also there. But when chlorophyll begins to disappear with the oncoming cold season, the oranges and yellows are exposed. At the same time, in autumn, red chemical compounds are produced in large quantity by some trees, and these are added to the orange and yellow. The brown color is that of tannin, a waste product of the tree's life processes.

Why do some years have autumns more colorful than others?
The intensity of autumn leaf coloration each year is different. This is because the amount and exposure of colored chemicals in leaves depend on the weather. Green chlorophyll disappears fastest during an autumn with bright sunlight and cold days. This disappearance quickly exposes the leaves' orange and yellow pigments to view. Dry weather concentrates sugar in the cell sap, which speeds up manufacture of red compounds. So the most colorful autumns depend on the weather. Dry, sunny days of an Indian summer that are followed by cool, dry nights will create the best season for the fall leaf show. You can ....

Some of those chemicals are the same ones that produce the smell and taste of 'blueberry' or in general 'berry flavor' or smell.

I too am a lover of COLOR in Cannabis Plants and all plants as I grow over 250 types of ornamentals..

This is what I have growing now and I can tell you that as these changed color the smell and taste has changed DRAMATICALLT to a berry or blueberry flavor and intense perfume.

Southwind, as always your wisdom is very much appreciated. Thanks for breaking it down, and thanks for the pics of that lovely Sativa.

Not sure if it's available where you are but you should try the Mendocino Purps. I have to say that aesthetically it's one of the tastiest, best smelling strains I've ever had -- and it has some crazy purples, oranges, light greens, even bluish colors to it. Ridiculously tight, dense buds too... just take a tiny nug, start breaking it apart, next thing you know there's enough for 3 bowls.

my biggest problem with purple bud in general (not all are low potency or taste), is the fact that it all looks cached after 1 hit because its so damn dark

i agree with alphacat; the grape ape and mendo purps/ gdp are supposedly top notch purple pot

older purple strains like purple #1 (and old dutch purple strain) and its derivatives are disappointing ( i just finished off smoking my stash of some p#1 x haze, that had a nice high and was completely purple but, ive had commercial brick that tasted better). remember, you're spending months of your life cultivating this stuff, dont waste it on crap

good luck!

some very apt points have been made here, IMO colour doesnt mean a thing but check these buds out.

the buds on these sativa's has changed alot in colour since this pic its taking on a more red and pink expression with darkening leaves I'll post more in the future.

A friend of mine had a purple strain that was killer, I don't remember exactly which one it was, but it was very potent. The only drawback was it took an extremely long time to veg, that's the only reason I didn't take a cut
