Noob First Rubbermaid Grow -- Questions

Hello all,

Been a lurker for a bit and finally going to start a micro grow. After looking at all the amazing builds here and gathering the immense knowledge, I think I am ready. But i got a couple questions after compiling my list of stuff to get.

I've been looking around a few stores (home depot, rona, walmart, lowes) and the only CFL they have are cool whites 42w, 2700lumens, 4100K color temp. Would I be able to use this for veg/flower with say 6 CFL's? I also couldn't find mylar so I'm going to resort to using foil paper (I know there will be hotspots) and aluminum tape temporarily until i can find it.

I got 1 black 68gal tub, is it necessary to paint it with a coat of black and a few coats of white to hide the glow? I'll be trying to grow blueberry skunk and Juicy Fruit x Northern Lights, would 2 plants fit in there the single tub with LST method?

Thanks again!

hi cmx
i'm new to this myself but i'll try to help some. I titled my thread with 'noob' in it too..it seems to scare people off ;)

anyway, you have walmart, a home depot and lowes and the ONLY cfl that any of them carry are that one kind? seems like there should be some other option. I'm sure someone will tell you that 4100 is the middle of the color range that is not really useful for veg OR flower, but I believe if you check on the "High-pod" thread by inefectualize, he is using a middle range color as well, and his plant came out awesome. but if any of the stores have any other options you would want higher color temp (6000+ "blues" Daylight) for veg and lower colors (2700 "reds" warm/soft) for flower.

For super cheap mylar, go to walmart in the sporting good/camping section and find "Emergency Blanket" . Its a dollar. I used that with alum. tape.

Supposedly the tubs that are already black are pretty light proof. You might have to test to find out. The problem with only one tub will be the height. Or do you plan to turn it up on its side?

hey,

thanks for the tip on the emergency blanket, gonna go pick one up tommorow.

yah its weird they only carry the same 42w 4100k cfl, maybe because i'm in canada? i;m going to hit up a couple more stores tommorow to check. if anything i might just try out the medium color range and see how that goes

I just made a rubbermaid into a ghetto rigged mother/clone room, i used panda film and metal tape to line the inside. Makes it look more profesional and it blocks basically all light leaks

Look harder you should be able to find the spectrum your looking for worse case use 1000lights or other online store. You can get them cheaper and at end of day cover your shipping cost so out of pocket cost is same as buying at store....just my 2 cents

Hello,

So i was able to find the cfl's. I got 2 42w 6500K (daylight) and 2 42w 2700K (soft white) for now. They were sold out of the daylight cfl's but they had plenty of 23w ones. I was thinking about getting 4 23w daylight cfl to add to the 2 42w, do you guys think thats ok or should i just pick up 4 more 42w.

I also picked up a few emergency blankets, a timer, 4 silent 120mm pc case fans and will start construction on my tub asap. Expect some pictures to come. (hard to believe i spent so much $$ on lights lol)

thanks again
