ok so im trying to vent a 400w cmh in a relatively small area (23"x20"x48"). there are plenty of passive intakes, and the fan (465cfm squirrel cage) will also be responsible for extracting air from a vegging room of the same size, its lit by cfls so heat there isnt really an issue. anyhow would it be more effective to make/buy a cooltube and use that, or use a piece of tempered glass with about a 4" gap between its edge and the wall. i know my fan is pretty overpowered, but ive had gnarly heat problems in the past.

cooling a cool tube would not be difficult with ~400 cfm an air-cooled (enclosed) hood would not be difficult either. If you upgraded you ballast every I would go with the hood (8"). Temps are still an issue with a cool tube and a 1000 watt.

The difference your going to get between a tube and a hood is light footprint. Both with help with heat issues the same IMO :joint:

of those two options I would go with the cool tube diy. ..
just make a good reflector to bounce the light down at the girls

what do you think about this light setup for a 8ft wide by 2 ft deep by 8 ft high closet?

XtraSun 8 Inch Reflector - Air Coolable $103.95

Hortilux - 1000 Watt Super High Pressure Sodium Bulb - LU1000B/HTL/EN $84.95

TO complete ventilation I'm going to get an exhaust fan ~250cfm be OK? and an intake vent, of course.

thanks

irie - imho 8' wide is too much for one bulb without a light mover. Two reflectors/bulbs or a light rail will provide a huge improvement in light coverage. Hth...
