I need some picture taking tips.

I tried a few title searches but coudn't find the magics words.

So I have a Canon Powershot A520, a decent point and shoot with most of your common options, most of which I don't understand as I have never been a competent picture taker in my life. (20 days in Europe and only one roll of film shot in that time and I ended up loading it wrong anyway). :badday:

So anyway, can someone lay down the basics of taking a decent bud shot, or point me to a thread that can help my sorry ass?

I know I can do better, I just need a few tips to get me on the right path.

Make sure to hold the camera steady.
the round dial on the back.
Press down to expose the flower icon.
This puts you into macro mode
Hold the camera close to the bud
Depress the camera button halfway but not all the way.
This will enable the camera to focus.
now hold super still and press down.

Repeat again and again. When you think you got one decent shot do it a few more times.

Try auto mode try portrait mode.
try with flash and without.

use a tripod if you got one. you can always set the camera on something as well.

Keep at it you'll get it.

Hope that helps.

p.s. here are a few shots from a P&S canon.

gettin a little better

gettin a little better

So I have been getting my hand steadier and got some better pics.

I'm still getting too much flash wash, what is the best lighting for bringing out the buds without the flash washing it out?

google chdk , adds a bunch of fuctions to your camera , set the camera on a delay and set the camera down, dont use the flash

You can also move the camera farther away from the buds, and then zoom in while in macro-mode. This helps the flash be less intense.

yea but when you zoom in you dont get as much detail as if you would just move the camera closer, I say turn off the flash and use cfls or your grow light

Oh yes you should only zoom if you have an optical zoom, so as to not harm the quality of the pics.

even the optical zoom is worse because its always best to have the camera close as possible if you want more detail

Zooming in for a macro shot from further away is not a great idea....

I would shut off the HID lamp and use a couple 6000k+ CFL's to take the pictures to get rid of that horrible Orange color....

You can also go into the menu and mess around with the whitebalace to help with the funny color.....

I took this picture with my old Nikon Coolpix 5000 Point and shoot... using a trippod tho.... I find a monopod works best to take pics in a crowded grow room.

Recently upgraded to a Nikon DSLR....

Dont use digital zoom ... , set the cam on the macro mode for budshots , some canon feature a Super Macro function as well , this can be used as well , just be sure that the " bud" is properly illuminated ... , if you think that the pic is to much illuminated try to adjust the aperture a bit higher , so the pic gets darker

some reference

PS: i'm used to SLR's only , so my knowledge with standard cam's is somewhat lacking , but im tryin' to help where i can :smoke:

I know the usage of proper macro-settings, and tripods are the way to go for the best results. Just thought I'd share a way in which you can take decent pics of the buds, without having to think about adjusting anything.

This was taken with Canon Powershot A75(Point and shoot), using the zoom in the macro-setting.
Would be better with a tripod, but it's still presentable, and requires very little camera-skill.

But some of your shots makes we want to buy a better camera:)
My A75 just broke, so I'll get a new one soon.

Another tip is to taking picture with flash with a piece of paper , adjust angle for best effect, you want the piece of paper to diffuse the light , might need manually adjust the shutter speed or flash output

i took this one using a envelope
