Easiest way to clean dirty glass

Tonight while tinkering I decided to clean my glass pipe but it's always a chore and I wasn't looking forward to boiling the glass in a pot or running hot water over it in the sink.

Then it dawned on me.

I got a clean glass jelly jar filled it with water and salt. Filled the pipe with salt and dropped it in the water. Put the glass jar in the microwave and set it to 5 minutes. I was amazed. That bowl cleaned up so much faster. Yes, I still had to pull the bowl out and let the hot water pour through it. I changed the water 3 times but the total time it took to clean was less than 10 minutes. The resin just gushed out of the bowl well before the water starts to boil. Once the water boils you of course want it to stop, but hold off until it gets right to the point it may boil over. That period of time will remove the most gunk.


Anyway, I thought I'd pass along this "discovery".

WHat r you trying to say ?? Boiling pipe in water with salt will get it cleaned? Microwave it and it works in under 10 minutes? What?

You will fuck some glass up if you boil it so be careful.


I've heard of microwaving the epsom salt / iso mixture but I have not tested this method.

becareful microwaving water that long, the water can actually exceed boiling point temperature then when agitated the water can blow up in a reaction to turn to steam and it will burn the shit out of you, or even worse you drop your peice and break it =[

Hello all,

The easiest way to clean glass...have someone else do it. I use rubbing alcohol.

it works because salt is one of the main active ingridients in most, if not all, house-hold soaps like dish-washers etc... btw, usually the foam is added for effect :yoinks:

you need to get yourselves some household steel wool

trust me it will make your bongs shine like crystal, takes the goo off easy as pie, its gonna come off like you wouldnt believe it. use warm water

i swear, its all you need, buy it at the grocery store

thats the shit right there, no need for superstrenght acids, alcohols or whatever. that stuff WILL remove anything from glass

As long as there is something in the cup of water in the microwave, it won't superboil. The reason it can superbowl, is becuase it can procure any bubbles without something (such as a toothpick or in this case a pipe) with it.

And as far as cleaning pieces...
99% iso alcohol + salt. If you have a really dirty piece, just stick it in a bag with that stuff, leave it over night...and in the morning shake for 20 seconds, pull and wash off piece, and bam, practically like new.

Boiling a properly kilned piece of boro-silicate glass will do nothing at all to the glass. If anything the only bad thing that could happen is if you put it in that hot ass water and then putting cold water instantly on it. Trust me i blow glass. Boiling is actually one of the better ways to take out all of the resins in a handpipe. I wouldnt boil my $1000 bub though LOL

Nah i didnt pay that either.It was a gift. It was made for me by my bestfriend who i dont wanna throw his name out on marijuana growing boards cause he grows too LOL.





I have some other headies too. I usually just chug on the bong though.

Has anyone used Acetone? I have heard Strait up Acetone works great, followed by a few ISO rinses. Although I have never tried it myself, as I dont have any pure Acetone, my friend (an ic'er swears by it, and said its the best thing he has ever used...) I would probably remove all rubber if its not a GoG piece though.

friend said if u wear contacts, or even just go get a big bottle of saline solution, u empty it out and fill with the acetone, and u can Squeeze the solution into a really dirty bowl and it will get all the stuff off in one try... I would recommend some sort of safety glasses or something i think and probably leather or something to protect your hands...

ISO alcohol and salt. Salt is not alcohol soluble so it won't dissolve in the alcohol. It acts as an abrasive (just like the grit in the 'Formula 420' crap).

If possible, submerge your piece in alcohol and let sit as long as u can. I usually do overnight. By morning, just a rinse with hot water will remove MOST of the crap. Fill the piece with salt and then a little alcohol and cover all the openings and shake it like a mofo to get the rest. Will look like new.

SO.... i blow glass, and i can usually get away with tossing a piece in the kiln while its hot, and it will burn every piee of resin out and i an just blow out the ashes when it's cooled (if the piece is stable and not too "worked", or not too prone to crack due to colors/how well the piece is worked...)

also.....

microwaving your pipes is OK if you have no fuming in it...
if you do have fuming in your pipe (i.e. silver or gold), the METALS in the pipe can completely fry your microwave after extended uses for cleaning your bowl (metal never belongs in the nuke)...

also...

i like to boil a lil isopropyl 91% in the microwave for like 10-15 seconds, then pour the hot alcohol through the bowl with salt or put salt and alcohol in plastic bag with bowl and SHAKE! hot alcohol and salt is the best way that I always use...

then just wash the pipe out when done.
