I am putting my res in a room below the grow room. I am doing a top feed drip system 1/2 inch line up to 18 3 gallon pots. I am using the fatter size drip lines. The res below the grow is about 13 feet down. What size pump should i use and how big of a res do i need?

Look up head pressure. You are going to need a pretty big pump for that 13 feet. I also would the same size tubing as the outlet on the pump, until you get upstairs.

Yes, look for the vertical head rating on the pump you buy... There is not a pump made specifically for hydro that will pump 13 feet vertically. I recommend a waterfall pump (which is what I use), or a heavy duty sump pump... Although if you'll be running the pump quite often, I'd go with the waterfall pump. Waterfall pumps are designed to run constantly and designed to pump water vertically. I've had one for a year, used it to top off res's from my rain buckets for a while, and it's now in my vertical aero setup. Pumps water uphill quite nicely. I have a total of 16 vertical feet it needs to pump, and the pump is rated at 1000gph at 22' vertical head. REMEMBER to look at the feet of vertical push it has... If it's low, you'll lose any and all pressure pumping vertically, especially 12 feet.

i went through 3 pumps that i had laying around the house both the 800 and 1500 couldent get the water up it was sad realy. they tried so hard. I am using a 2000 gph pump.... I am pushing it through 1/2 inch tubing. I feel bad the poor pump has to work very hard. But I am very happ with having my res in the gerage.... 70f is the hottiest it has gotten so far. and it makes grate use of my grow space not having to have a res in there.

Just remember to get a few psi greater than that required for 13ft H2O head, since you're going to get significant pressure drops from fluid friction across the inner walls of your lines.

im tell you homie try a OR...... if you want i can do a test with mine..... right now my or6500 is got a head of 5 then drop's back down 2 feet then into 4 90deg angle's and it's too strong i had to put a ball valve to slow it down..

i have plenty of 1/2" hose i can do 20+ feet

I would SOOO get another pump if i could. But i realy just dont have any money and have to live with what i got for now... I am so broke... (Hold yourself) I dont have a setpoint co2 controller in my sealed room.... i am not evean pumping the co2 yet... I have 2 tankes and regulators..... ( when i got raided they dident take those ) they took all my electronics sooo I am trying to save 350$ for a setpoint co2 controller... also i have NO AIR filtration yet or a dehumidifier..... i shoudlent evean be growing in the room yet but i am so broke i cant wait ... luckly the humidity has stuck at 46%... i think its cuz i am running a 10k AC in a size smaller then 4x8 . I have the ac set to vent right now while i dont have co2... hell i might evean make a diary .... i have the plants in on 18 hours and its a setup IDENTICAL to so quick's... only 1200 Watts though =(

Also another thought.. I would like to run a inline pump but sence its 13 feet up the water flows all the way back down and from my experiance with inline's from my reef tanks they dont run unless there is water in the line.... =( i could run it on the ground next to my res and have a kinda loop down to the pump bit i could still see it running dry.

and no i still have not figured out how to post a quote right.
those are great cheap pumps they do just what there supposed to untill u let it run dry for a min, ive tore up a few pumps in my day and those will tear up super fast with dry starts. but all in all u cant beat the head and pressure on those. had one pulling 18 foot head out of the creek with no problems .
depending on the area your in u may be able to get some serious pumping power cheap in a used well pump, round here $50 will get u a 3/4 hp in running order not much u can do about choking them down u just gotta run a big return line. if run right u can adjust it down to a single 1/4" line or a few 1" water cannons depending on needs
