1000w mh veg question

Yes, I'm a noob setting up my first indoor grow, been reading as much as my eyes let me. :bashhead:
Seems everyone agrees that the bigger the light the better so my budget gets me a switchable 1000w mh-hps.

So my question is this, can I START my seeds under a 1000w mh or do I HAVE to start them under a T5 or equivilant?
I'm trying to get started with as small of an investment as possible, I've already got my 1000w mh-hps light, 6" fan w/filter, circ. fan and firtilizer.

Any and all advice appreciated.. Thanks Ya'll! :joint:

dude i got some seedlings doing phenominal under 2k MH.. i too have a switchable balast..

even HPS would be just fine for some seedllings i've seen it been done with great success.

you got the equipment why not use it??

at this stage you just have to be extra careful about temp control but you say you have a 6'' fan so hook it up man and you should be golden..

no sense in wasting the light power you have, Remember even all that artificial light is NOTHING compared to natural sunlight!

what kinda fan you got?? whats your set up?? hows the airflow in the room?

The room is 5'x8'x7.5'. Its filter-sealed hood-fan venting into attic.
The fan is a 445cfm fan w/ a carbon filter.

The room is sealed w/ a 6" vent. (so its not sealed? :nono: )
I guess I'm worried about burning very young sprouts and about strech.

My plan is to add a second 1000w lite for the second grow so I'll be getting a second exh fan, 1 for the filter, 1 for the lights.

While you can fry seedlings with heat proximity and IR, your seedlings laugh in the face of your puny 1K. These things are designed for the SUN. If you germ under CFLs or floros, make sure to acclimate them to the big lamp over the course of a few days.

Anyone got a suggestion on distance light to seedling, the hood is air cooled so is it the heat on the hand method?

Thanks guys! Everyone on this site ROCKS!!!! :rasta:
I swear I learn something every time I'm here.

i've always heard too hot for your hand then too hot for the plant

for seedlings you want the light fairly far away. but use the hand technique as they start to grow

a 1000w will generate alot of heat, that is going to be your main concern. It will dry out your medium super quickly as well, being air cooled, it will give you some more play. But think of them as babies, you would not start a baby with steak right away, you work it into that.

so as the plants begin the harden up, start moving the light closer.

it looks like at seedling stage you want a 1000 watter about 3 feet away

SPAINMED: Thanks for that chart! I'll definantly be keepin that handy.

Dr.DOG: I've seen your info all over the place, I will most definatly be listening to the doctor.

If ya'll don't mind, I got a couple things I'd like to run past ya'll.

1- I'm gonna try for some good sized plants on the first run, 4'-5'. Am I correct that I should veg them to around 2'? My first seeds will be AK-48 and ICE from Nirvana. After I weed out the males I'm gonna try to take clones.(By this point I hope to have a T5 for cloning.) Anyway, how many 4'+ plants can I fit under a 1000w light?

2- I may be getting ahead of myself here. I'm gonna be adding a 2nd 1000w light for my 2nd or 3rd run. Will a 6" 445cfm fan be strong enough for two lights? I'll be pulling fresh air from another room, go through approx 2.5-3' of insulated ducting, turn 90 degs, then light, 1.5' ducting, light, turn 90 deg, then 2.5-3' ducting to fan and into attic. I'll keep all duct work strait to reduce drag. Ya'll think I'll be good?

DAMN! I DIDNT TYPE THIS MUCH IN COLLAGE! LOL! :asskick:

Anyway, thanks for any and all help. (GOD KNOWS I NEED IT!)

PEACE AND :smoweed:

damn man 2000 w in a 5x 8 room, I think that maybe a bit overkill

Not to mention you should check to see if your outlet(ac) can handle that, the last thing you want is breakers(fuses) poppin during lights on. You will have fans and other electrical items in there all drawing current. I would say you would want 2 bulbs for a room twice that size, but that is just me.

In my experience when i ran Ak, they tripled in size, so with 5 feet for your wanted height, I would think about flippin them closer to 18 inches to a foot.

Ok your vortex should be fine, are you planning on adding any carbon filters? You still need to expel the air from that room, so possibly two 6 inchers. Just sucking out the hot air from the cool tube will not really help ya much.

So make sure you have exhaust and intake for your room

Thanks for the kind words btw, but the best advice I have for you, is to check someones grow, there is alot of advice sent out there, by people here that are kind of suspect in the knowledge dept. I will only take advice from someone I "KNOW" they know their shit.

Best of luck with your grow

Yo Dr Dog. Your quick on the responce :)

As far as power goes, I've got enough juice, a dedicated 20amp circit, for the first run, (light, fans, ect.)
I'm exh first run thru the light. 6" CAN filter into the light then 6" CANFAN exh into the attic.

For the expantion I'll be runnin 2 seperate 20amp circits with room for a third to the grow room givin' me 4 20 amp circits total.

I'm thinkin 3 20amp circs should be good for 2 lights, 2 6" fans plus misc. circ fans, timers ect...

The 4th circ is for later, I'm thinkin about goin to a EBB and GROW bucket system down the road.

I should be good on heat control. My grow room has a AC vent thru the central heat and air plus I'm using insulated duct work.

I hear ya on the advice thing DOG! I've got some good laughs from some stuff I've read on here, thank god its relitivley easy to to seperate the possers from the growers.

You realy think that 2000w is over-kill in a 5'x8', seems lots of folks say 1000w is perfect for a 4'x4'.

yeah, but you want some room to move around stuff

I leave like 2 feet extra in my grows, that way I can do stuff in there without banging me head on sharp hood corners and then kicking over plants. The best way to see what you will need is use the horizon. That line on the wall where the light stops. If your plants are all in that you are fine.

I have a room of 7x7x7 and I could not imagine jamming 2 1000 watters in there, when one I feel would do just fine
Incidentally I use a 600 hps and a 400 mh, sometimes together, mainly separate. I dont need the higher electrical bill. Using my room to 75 % potential it increases my power bill by 38 dollars a month, hardly anything compared to the 400 I spent a month for weed.

A-MEN DR DOG!!

I hear ya on the power bill vs how much I pay for shhhiittttyyyyyy buds around here.

Acctulaty, the shit thats around here don't qualifey as BUDS! :frown:

Anyway, BIG thanks for the info, suggestions and support :kos:
