gonejah thanks for the props on the box yes it is 2 cabinets back to back then I used the shelves to screw both boxes together .I am using a passive intake on the bottom of the box and a elaciant fan for exhaust also a home made charcol filter. I presantly am using about 2000+watts of cfls and a tornado fan for circulation.forget about the pics thing im not very computer savy. :bashhead:

I have a couple of questions about these cabs that I was hoping someone could help me with. What is the quietest fan/blower that still moves enough air you can use with one of these? I would be using a cool tube and a carbon filter along with a couple of those darkroom louvers. Next question is: can you tell me if the Hydrohut carbon filters from Maryland Hydroponics (mdhydro) would work good? Either the elf or the goblin model. I'd really like to use the Elf model as long as you all think it would be good enough. The description for it says:

ELF

CFM : 150-265 cfm Weight: 5.5 lbs Flange: 4 inches Diameter: 6 inches

What do you guys (or gals) use to cover up windows? I already have these windows in this room covered, but if I opened the doors of this cabinet with the 400HPS I would be using lit I think it would be pretty obvious to people passing by what the light was from and I want it totally blocked from view outside. I thought about putting cardboard over the windows inside and leaving what I already have up on the windows, that way nothing will change as far as looks from the outside, other than zero light being able to shine through. Or would some thick black plastic be better? I'm just curious what any of you use for that. When you are working in these do you turn the lights off before you open them up usually (for those that have to worry about it I mean)? I really need to keep noise down and figure out what to use to block these windows with and I will be all set. Why do so many of you use speed controls on your fans instead of just using a smaller cfm fan? Are the higher cfm fans quieter? I'm sure I'll be asking more questions soon. Thanks for the help.

Hey jonezin. I can't say for certain what the quietest fan out there is, but I remember a few people raving about some Panasonic bathroom fans as far as being extremely quiet. I still haven't used one. It might have been in this thread, a year ago or longer.

A lot of us use speed controllers set on low with larger fans because they are quieter than a smaller fan at full speed, but still move a good amount of air. I use a 6" vortex and I can't imagine the fan being too much quieter, it's more the rushing of air that you hear. I put a small but loud fan on top of my cab which drowns out the noise perfectly. I tell people I just keep it on all the time for the white noise to help me sleep.

As for covering windows, that's not much of an issue where I live but a good bet would probably be some black plastic or panda film behind your curtain/blinds. Sometimes you have to use more than one layer of black plastic, but panda film should be lightproof. Otherwise you might just check your plants in the daytime.

icough2getoff, thank you for the help. I've read all 79 pages of this thread twice now and I cannot wait to get everything I need for this.

Have any of you ever seen these fans? http://www.mdhydro.com/acairindufan.html I would rather get the vortex but funds are low. If you think those are junk I'll just have to wait until I can afford the Vortex to get one.

What's the latest consensus on Lumatek ballasts? Or Future Brite? I really don't want a core and coil ballast. I also don't really know if getting a Lumatek is a good idea if they still create a lot of RF interference. I've been reading up on them and they say it's not an issue as long as you use their shielded cord?

One last thing, aren't you one of the ones that said they had used a 600 watt light in one of these cabs? I'm tempted to just get a 600 instead of the 400. Do you know if you can use a 430 watt bulb with a 400 watt Lumatek or Future Brite ballast?

Thanks again for the help. :jump:

WOW!

What a killer thread. I'm having difficulty taking it all in.

Has anyone done a tek or two on a BASIC conversion job on a cheap cabinet?

I'm looking to build just a flouro Mum/Veg chamber as cheaply and efficiently as possible. I'd LIKE something along the lines of 28"DX32"HX42"W but it really needs to be stealthy.

All materials MUST be easily purchasable online as I don't have easy 'Store' access.

Is there a cabinet out there for me or do I start looking for a deep chest type freezer?

Salvation Army, yard sales, Spring cleaning, curb shopping. Not to mention Home Depot, Lowes, Ikea. They're everywhere.

Reader's Digest Version. Buy a hole saw (4"-6", you tell me) Punch 3 holes in the cab. One at the top, to with you attach an exhaust fan, two at the bottom covered with filters. Hang your light and grow.

True stealth will also require light baffles, air filter and something to blame the noise on (aquarium, box fan etc) because there is NO SUCH THING as silent.

Have you checked out the Rubbermaid grows?

Yeah I have used a 600w with a cooltube in my old C24 which I forget its dimensions but it was bigger than what I grow in now. My current flower cab is 20x36x80 inches and I now use a 400w, which seems perfect. I think a 600w for what I have now would be overkill. I don't know about your bulb question, maybe someone else does.

I jumped the gun a little and just started buyin shit since its been so long since ive grown and that only being a couple time and on a rediculously smale scale, i got the cab and i ordered a light, but i should have went for a better light, but i messed up and got a switchable 400 watt enclosed ballast. the link is below to the light i purchased. im wondering if it would be worth it to break the light down and remote the ballast? and let, me get a few more post and i can post pictures of the cab in progress, becuase im sure ill need your guys help if at all possible.
well the url wouldnt work, but it the micro 400watt from discount-hydro.

Been planning a grow cabinet to keep some tomato phenotypes through the winter. I was inspired by this thread and have started a cool tube 400w HPS cabinet. I picked up a sweet unit by Element's at Lowe's for $100. Measures 48" x 21" x 71". There is a horizontal shelf at 48" and I'm putting all the electronics and ventilation equipment up there. I'm not sure how well I'll contain these monsters in 48" of space, but I've got to try.

Going to be using a Stanley blower to cool the light with ambient room air, and ventilate the cabinet. Youngsters will be in coir and moved to organic soil I make.

My latest mom/cloner cab... S/P 100 tdx exhaust fans and and 17 inch dual T-5's in 2 sections and 2 dual T-5's in the other 2 sections.

Each plant is a different strain.

Wow. So we are the go to club for people trying to keep tomato phenotypes through the winter. And you know what you can do with your cab come spring? Rotate your crop to cannabis. All farmers know that it is good to rotate your crops.
Please post pics to legitimize this entire thread. See, people grow all kinds of things in these cabs and by people I mean psoulocyb3. No really, we need more people like you on these boards.
The last two posts are by people who posted their first posts in this thread. This thread has always attracted the smartest, nicest, no nonsense growers. But I'm high what do I know.

Hey everyone havent stopped by the forum and really asked anything but I have a project in motion..
Where can I get Mills Pride Cabinets?
Thanks.

Hey herbglaze, I'd check home depot, or any store that might sell storage cabinets. There are different brands out there that are practically the same. My home depot stopped carrying mills pride and now carry a brand called do-able and it works just the same. Adjustable hinges make it nice to find the perfect fit for your weather stripping, but there are all kinds of cabinets out there that you could modify. I've seen some on craigslist, garage sales, stores that sell furniture, etc. In fact, I found my mother/clone dresser in the garbage.

Here's what I got going on this time around in my do-able cabinet. A couple BMR F2 clones in coco. Just began flower.

I didn't mean to lead you guys that much on the tomato thing. I'm not on ICmag for veggies ;) I'm finishing a couple late bloomers under cfls in this cabinet until my equipment is all together. Should have this converted completely to HPS by end of the weekend.

Finished preliminary work on the Stanley blower. I removed the safety grates on the main intake and exhaust, and have 6" starters on it. Will be running a 4" system off of it.

I'm going to try no cooltube, even though I have it sitting next to me. Going to be trying a vertical, stadium inspired grow with this shallow cab to see what's possible. I'll only add the cooltube if distance or heat become an issue.

Tomorrow, I finish light leaks and the ventilation system.

Seedlings are just popping up in a different veg chamber.

Disguised

icough2getoff,

Hows your temps in your flower cab? I like it, very clean design and plenty of head room without a bunch of ducting taking up space :jump:

I'm thinking about doing something similar with an Adjust A Wing.

Peace

Hey Disguised, my temps have been staying just a few degrees above room temp. I'm a fan of keeping it simple and using the least amount of ducting possible since about the only noise I hear from my cab is the woosh of air. I have 1 90° bend which goes straight to my carbon scrubber, hidden by some cardboard boxes on a shelf above my cabinet.

I checked out the adjust a wing you speak of. That reflector looks badass.
