What's new

La Grasserie's 2x400w Jock Horror, NLxBB

howdy all,

Here's a little project I've been working on since this summer. While I am no stranger to being a cultivator, this is my first attempt that I have actually put enough pride and sweat into to merit sharing with the wider community.

Space: 5'x18' space behind false wall with 10' ceilings, 2x6" intakes from adjacent room and 1x6" outtake to attic.
Lights: 2x400w HPS digitals, 6" sealed vented hoods, 2x29w CFLs
Fans: 1x165cfm 6" inline fan venting to attic, a small 6" desk fan on one intake, large circulating fan for room
Soil: FFoF cut with 10-20% perlite and 5-10% vermiculite
Nutes: FF Regime (Grow, Bloom, Bud), superthrive
Cooling: 600w window unit w/ thermostat in adjacent room
Misc: Some mylar on the walls, uninsulated aluminum ducting, an unused 1.5'x1.5'x'6' cabinet in corner of room
Strains: Jock Horror, Northern Light x Big Bud, Indoor Mix. Courtesy Nirvana.

Relative Timeline so far (pardon the incomplete sentences):
June - Popped 10 JH and 10 NLxBb seeds in some peat pellets. Germination results:8 JH....only 2 NLxBb :badday: . Seedlinged and vegged under a couple CFLs while I started construction of the false wall.

July - False wall completed, plants get settled, ventilation initially added with Stanley/Lasko Fan. Fan would go on to deform and break down in September, but otherwise worked like a champ up until. Switched over to 1 400w HPS for JH and NLxBb seedlings after transfer to gallon pots. Popped Indoor Mix into pellets. Topped some of taller JH.

August - Accidentally let Indoor Mix stretch a bit, but reburied deep and recovered. Took clones from 6 remaining JHs. 2 NLxBb very resistant to branching at first, topped. Pulled a NLxBb for having balls. Tentatively planned to start flowering mid-Sept. The threat of severe weather conditions cause an unexpected week long vacation with plants in tow. Light cycle maintained at 18/6.

September - Back in action. 5 JH and 1 NLxBb put into 4 gallon grow bags, under 12/12 as of 9/14. Originally under 1 400w, but trained now under 2 with amazing coverage. Joined by about 7 JH clones and a few IMs. More clones taken of original JH/NL for next gen as well as some set aside for mothers. More plants than I know what to do with really.

Pictures might be a bit color rich as I am kinda just mashing buttons and hoping it looks halfway decent...its a camera outside my scope.

Wooo! We're on vacation! Plants need a change of scene too.

Another canopy shot. I've trained down with twine to try leveling the field.
NlxBb is the tall stalky sucker to the right:

Which is having curling issues as of a day ago. I believe its a light proximity thing and back it off with twine/light raising. Any other suggestions?

DAY 14 - two weeks.

things I'm happy about:
power usage/lighting
air flow
plant health
containing smell. so far.

things that could use improvement:
temperature (currently ranges 75-88 on a warm day)
watering. its a pain to crawl under the canopy after a long day.
training. i shouldn't have moved plants around so much initially.
establishment of an 18hr light cabinet/space. my clones are gettin big.

A shot of the back o' the room. Can't fit it all in with this lens.

A pretty stalk of budlets, JH.

More Budlets. How does this look for 2 weeks in?

I think I have some nute burn with the NLxBb. Gave it alot of fresh water to flush a little, but not before this popped up. Only leaf thus burned.

Aside from NLxBb's pissiness, all is doing well. The temps are a little high at the moment, hitting around 85 on cool days and 88 on warmer. I expect a shift downwards as the season wears on. Cheers :nono:

DAY 16:
Kudos to my partner for taking these shots, hes way more photohandy than I am.

The veg tent is finished and now holds 8 JH and 3 NLxBB cuttings. 2x29w CFLs. Temps around 73-80.

YOU MIGHT ADD A LIGHT RAIL MOVER TO THOSE 400S. LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE ALREADY DEALING WITH TEMPS. ARE YOU USING CO2. I HEARD THAT RUNS THE TEMP UP BUT THE PLANTS CAN TAKE A HIGHER TEMP LEVEL WHILE CO2 IS IN USE. HOW MANY GIRLS ARE THERE,, THEY LOOK GOOD 2 ME. WHETHER YOUR HEAD IS SPINNIN OR YOUR RECORD IS SPINNIN...KEEP ON SPINNIN DJXXPLATINUM

Thanks Sam, keep on Mountain Jammin :)

DJ, I'd love a little light rail, though that will probably come into the budget a little later on and with some reconfiguring of the frame. As far as CO2, that's also a down the road. There are plenty of things I need to tweak on this setup before I further fund some upgrading. Currently I'm spinning Check Your Head by the beasties.

FLOWER -
5 JH seeded
1 NLxBb seeded
(these 6 plants account for 80-90% of the plant mass)
5 JH clones (mixed, I lost track of phenotypes during vacation)
4 IM seeded

Farmer - This is my first go with NLxBB. I am amazed this lady made it actually, only 2 of the 10 seeds germinated, one being male. And in general it seems more nutrient sensitive than the JH. But I definitely love the growth.

--DAY 18---
My partner, now dubbed "Guillermo", never ceases to amaze with the photo-skills. Some wider shots of the room:

A closeup of the flagship IM, starting to develop a citrus-like aroma:

that one pic looks more like ph or ph swing burn than nute burn to me. is that a possibility? Otherwise looking good. I have 2 JH girls I am just starting to flower out for the first time, hope they look as good as yours. Good luck!

its a possibility. I haven't taken any pH readings of my water or soil yet.

Do you soil guys regularly check this? I know good old municipal [H+] is a bit basic at around 7.7 in my hood. What are the usual "tell-tales" of pH burns?

Jock Horrors are a hoot, I hope you like them. They were relatively easy to sex and really start pulling in the nutes a week or so into flowering. Ditto on the stretching: its been minimal so far.

---DAY 21---
Before watering with nutes today, I addded about 2 tsp of lemon juice to each gallon. Should bring down the pH a tad. Three weeks down, five to go!

Temps are at about 85-86 highs now. It all seems to be dialed in (fingers crossed) going into the 4th week. Peace n Love.

La Grasserie- I would like to add that I too think that is a PH flux issue causing the weird leaf curls. Do you use any lime in your mix? I believe I am going to begin to do so on my next grow. I tried for a while to let the Oyster Shells correct the PH , ( as I was told they would), but never found that to be the case. So now I PH all my waterings to the 6.6 range and have zilcho problemos with PH. Just my .02 pennies. Otherwise things look great. Looks like youre in for a nice harvest mate!

---DAY 25---
A cold front has swept into town, which means nice, cooler temps just in time for flowering :rasta: .

Temps are currently at 83F on the canopy with today's range at 75-85. Everything got a little training/arranging to even out the canopy...long overdue. I've been feeding with nutes every other watering, 1/2-3/4 strength. Most of the plants eat it right up, while the NlxBb and one JH have continually shown signs of ph flux/nute burn, and thus, been placed on a water diet. There are some ideas in the works for collecting rainwater...stay tuned.

Despite a few spotty health issues, this grow is a mean, clean, green machine. The clones are now re-veged and beginning to shape up. And inevitably, we've started to throw some numbers around on prospective yield. I'll keep quiet on that until closer to harvest, but I'm curious as to public guesstimates. I've never had so many greens.

these are all Jock Horror. Frosting up well with four more weeks to go.

----DAY 32----
Coming up on 5 weeks now. Its been a wonderful journey, though I'll admit I am more than ready to harvest these gals and enjoy the fruits of our efforts.

Today the NLxBB was flushed. It somehow squeezed out of the grow room and had a little bath:

----DAY 36----

Guillermo found an elph. This is of most fortunance, for we have been granted MACROVISION just in time for the climax of our efforts. Week five was all about frosting the hellz up for the plants and figuring out balance of nutes on my end. The NLxBb has recovered quite well since its flush and has started the frost factor. My cat got banged up in a fight and isn't responding like normal. I hope he'll pull through ok.

here is a couple of pics day 30 into flower, one of them look kind of like your four horseman

My shortest JH is 36", with the tallest around 41". Most were topped and have been subject to my moderate training, otherwise they'd be at 5'.

It's good to see some other Jock Horror in flower right now, and kudos on their fine appearance of health. Definitely get the lights down nice n' low, if possible, in the next weeks. This is a time of heavy flower and trich formation. I also rearranged my plants during this period so that airy, less developed buds on the perimeter of the room came into closer proximity to the bulb. Dropped some CFLS in.

Light em up man and good luck. Homegrown by christmas!

Today, Guillermo and I were productive sons of bitches and built a veg cab. Almost. We still need to add fans and other finishing touches. Btw, you can never have enough black duct tape.

Lighting: ~170w CFLs
Area: ~2 sqft.
Vent: 3" cpu fan (pending)
Intake: passive opening down low

And that other room:
---DAY 43 of FLOWER-----
The fall weather is here to stay, and my temps are now approaching perfect. Upper 70s lights on, Upper 60s lights off. About time. Everything got a good watering with light nutes today. One more good chow down this week, then its the end game. Some plants are leaning under the weight of bud and have been tied straight. The NLxBb is really coming into its own with these long, dense stalks...I'm going to leave it going a bit longer than JH.
