Thanks guys, hey wonderful news!!!! One seed has indeed germinated!! None of the others look even remotely close to germing. They are all very dark/black in color, and they just look dead. Im so psyched. That means if I got one in 50 or so, then more should germ!! This is awesome, I will post everyday in hopes that this thing is going to break soil. Im also going to start another 50. I going to pre-crack them, and use a very diluted water with Superthrive. Any other suggestions?

i have had great results with thrive-alive green label. lots of people scuff seeds with nail file or high grit sand paper.
best of luck with them.... will be cool to see what comes up, hoping to see some pure unique ibl indicas, was there any around in your area in the 70's?

soak them 24h's before pre-cracking them ... ,so the shell isnt that prone to splitt and damage the white inner part of the bean ...

good luck ...

How about freezing them overnight and then soaking them in slightly warm water then into paper towels, to try to trick them to "awaken".

I had some old KC Brains seeds that looked black like you are describing that ended up germinating over 2 weeks after I started the process. So take good care of them and don't give up.

Take care,

Nugz

Great idea, I think Im going to try some of the suggestions here. I didnt toss the rest of the ones I have germing yet, so I will leave them, and start another run using these methods.

WOW!

WOW!

You lucky dog! With all the seeds you've got, some have to come up. Great luck and I wish I knew you personally to sample some end result!! :jump:

Sorry about your families loss.

Great luck getting those beans!

I suggest giving a few a h2o2 soak and see how that does. I have had great luck with very old seeds using 3% h2o2 @ ~4ounces/gal

Best of luck on your hunt!

I think I had a dream about this once...

Condolences and congrats. (Jeeze, how many times do you hear that?)

And I too cannot wait to see what you have there. Please keep us posted.

Also, I would indeed try freezing the next 50 for a day and then using Superthrive @ 1 ML per gallon to soak them. I think you will have slightly better results, which would make a huge difference.

But still, at the rate you're going, you'll have 15 - 20 plants out of this. And one of the batches in there could all germ you never know.

IMO, I would start thinking about what you want to do with these. And making sure I have proper space and all. I wouldn't want to lose something like that.

I don't post this pretending to know the answer, but, if those are equatorial seeds, adapted specifically to that zone would freezing be a good idea?

Edit: Road Kill Skunk, maybe

there is a scientifically explainable reason for the freezer time suggestions i don't remember all of the whys but many commercial seed companies and greenhouses chill/freeze seed to
energize some freeze thaw sensitive response related to germination i would definately add a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide to the soak water and the towel water to avoid fungaL PROBLEMS WITH A LONGER THAN NORMAL GERMINATION TIME

try puting 20 or so in a glass ashtray withn water and put that in a low flat box and place it on top of a tv ,fridge, computer power supply etc warm dark place dont touch it for 1-3 days

check it every day after that andadd water as necessary....

i think i heard some where that archeologists had germinated
seeds from really old tombs and stuff from a frozen wooly mammoth's guts i know that some russian archeologists ate and fedd their dogs wooly mammoth steaks in northern siberia
in the late 80's early 90's [russian grad student at precolumbian dig near my home town 1992] so thers a lot of
potential there thats still good
