Rick Wright: Wish you were here

On this date 33 years ago, Pink Floyd released its underrated classic "Wish You Were Here." And on this date in 2008, that title becomes sadly applicable to Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright -- dead at age 65 from cancer.

In an eerie bit of timing, Wright died on the same day Floyd guitarist David Gilmour said in a published interview that chances for another Pink Floyd reunion are almost non-existent.

Pink Floyd member Richard Wright dies
Wright died Monday after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain
LONDON - A Pink Floyd spokesman says founding member Richard Wright has died. He was 65.

Wright died Monday after a battle with cancer at his home in Britain. His family did not want to give more details about his death. The spokesman is Doug Wright, who is not related to the artist.

Richard Wright met Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Nick Mason at college and joined their early band Sigma 6.

Sigma 6 eventually became Pink Floyd and Wright wrote and sang some of the band’s key songs. He wrote “The Great Gig In The Sky” and “Us And Them” from Pink Floyd’s 1973 “The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

He left the group in the early 1980s to form his own band but rejoined Pink Floyd for their 1987 album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason.”

He has left a wonderful legacy in his music. That's the great thing about musicians, they live on in our minds through their music. I'm an avid PF fan...has always been my favorite band, of all bands....brings me to tears to lose such a talent...we're all gonna go sometime, today was simply his time.

RIP.

A SAD DAY INDEED

I'm a huge fan, especially of the early daze 60s ~ 70s.
The older I get the more steadily my peers seem to be
moving on, Rick being just a handful of yrs older than I
makes it hit home all the harder.......

R.I.P. Rick Wright

I am totally shocked at the news, my very earliest memories of non-church or kiddie music is Darkside of the Moon (when i was a child i loved, the "alarm clock song", time) and in first grade when we were learning about England i told the teacher desperation was the English way, and they remain to this day my fav band. I have held out hope for a reunion, especially after live 8 but to no avail. His keyboard playing, especially in the reprise of shine on you crazy diamond, was simply haunting. I recall an interview with him where they, Pink Floyd, had played at the royal albert hall, and he had the pipe organ rigged with fire works damaging the pipes, it was the last time they ever were allowed to play there. Thanks mr. Wright for all the fond musical memories, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
