Marijuana Ingredient May Fight Bacteria

Marijuana may be something of a wonder drug — though perhaps not in the way you might think.

Researchers in Italy and Britain have found that the main active ingredient in marijuana — tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC — and related compounds show promise as antibacterial agents, particularly against microbial strains that are already resistant to several classes of drugs.

It has been known for decades that Cannabis sativa has antibacterial properties. Experiments in the 1950s tested various marijuana preparations against skin and other infections, but researchers at the time had little understanding of marijuana’s chemical makeup.

The current research, by Giovanni Appendino of the University of the Eastern Piedmont and colleagues and published in The Journal of Natural Products, looked at the antibacterial activity of the five most common cannabinoids. All were found effective against several common multi-resistant bacterial strains, although, perhaps understandably, the researchers suggested that the nonpsychotropic cannabinoids might prove more promising for eventual use.

The researchers say they don’t know how the cannabinoids work, and whether they would be effective as systemic antibiotics would require much more research and trials. But the compounds may prove useful sooner as a topical agent against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, to prevent the microbes from colonizing on the skin

what I've read previously (no source, my apologies) is that cannabis takes care of gram positive bacteria.

Me thinks this plant (especially with its help with autoimmune disorders) could be a very unique immune system / total health herb. Like the next echinecea, lol...

I recently heard this on the stash, it sounds like a lot of people may be able to resolve some serious situations. I knew a person who died from an infection that was antibiotic resistant. It happened faster than anyone could cope, with antibiotics failing at every attempt, it was astonishing tp both Doctors and family.

Everyone was devastated, he had gone from a small cut on the foot at the beach to the grave in a mater of weeks. It was reminiscent of the Military Officer who died of an infection. This officer had scratched his cheek while picking roses for his lady. Of course predating antibiotics circa WWI; an infection developed, he was doomed to a rapid death as the infection penetrated deep into his face and body.

This was such a sad and tragic story, it really brought home to me just how seriously I had taken my heath care for granted. I would have to say that had I not run several cycles of antibiotics in my life I would most likely share a similar fate as the Officer. With resistant bacteria on the rise we find more situations each year like that of my acquaintance who took a tragic last walk on the beach.

While I'm a bit cynical to put my combat boots away just yet, I can feel the movement reaching a juggernaut like momentum. It feels good to get conformation, in some big media no less, that the plant that brings me and so many more peace of both mind and body, is indeed a much needed medicine.

Simply put, RIGHT ON!
