2x1000's vs. 3x600's (movers?)

ok so i am wanting to maximize my yield in a 4x8 space (tray or soil bed)

what would be better?

-3 600W lights

OR....

-2 1000W lights with a light mover

i know 3x600 will have more even distribution than 2x1000's normally, but would the 2x1000's with a mover be better? they would going back and forth over the whole area so it seems like they would provide more light than 3x600s

if it matters, i will be growing SOG style with at least 1 plant per sq. foot and veggin probably 1-3 weeks before flowering

if you can cool the 1k's go for them but i warn u now its a fucking bitch to do need a/c and at least 8" vortex to cool them

Whatever

I don't know that 1 plant per sq ft is considered SOG. After some playing around that's the density I prefer, give or take. A friend told me SOG is basically 1 plant per 6 sq" and flowering rooted clones with no veg. With 2 1000's in a 4 x 8 space you do not need a light mover really but you definitely get a hot spot in the center. 600's are better for stationary growing due to better light distribution and the heat thing is totally a non issue if you cool your hoods properly...it really doesn't matter which way you go with regarding heat except you can get a 600 closer due to less light intensity.

Cooling 2 1000's will basically take the same cfm as cooling 3 600's. 2 1000's will be a simpler and less expensive setup and will work just fine in a 4 x 8 space.

I aircool 2 1ks with a 6in fan no prob. Like said air cooled hoods can go right over the canopy too. Less equipment also with 1ks. A 1k does a 4x4 very nicely with a square air cooled hood. No mover necessary IMO but cool if you wanna rock one.

Both are good options but if cost is an issue 2 systems is cheaper than 3. And if its a closed in area 3 600s will need to be aircooled too prob. Im gonna run a 4x8 sun hut with 2 aircooled 1ks cooled by a 6 in.

ok thanks Guy's... Just have a couple more Qs

Is it worth buying new ballasts/bulbs to run 3x600s per table since I already have 1000s?

How much closer to the plants do you put a 600 compared to a 1000. BTW the hoods are NOT vented, I just run AC to keep room temps below 80. It works fine and I'm keeping my 1Ks about 1-1.5 feet from canopy with no burns

No it's not worth buying a new set of 600's IMO. A better investment might be to go with a vented hood setup? I dunno...using an a/c like that is like trying to cool an oven....but seems like its working for ya. I ran 1k MH's as close as 9" (to avoid bleaching from light intensity and not from heat) but normally ran the HPS about 20" and the 600 air cooled HPS about 16".

You can typically run a 600 closer than a 1000 because of reduced light intensity. I've only run air cooled hoods so can't speak about the heat generation issue...but never had a problem with 1000's.

Honestly if you can veg up to 3 weeks and be happy the 1000's and 1 plant per sq ft will do great.

shorter plants with less veg, i.e. a sog, go with the 600s. you won't need that deep penetration in a sog....

You have 1000's... its almost not worth selling them off for the benefits of 600's.

I've run 400's, 600's & 1000's... they all work, just depends on how you work it.

now this is fact! :joint:

If you were starting new.....ya go for 3 600s over a larger area....or go for thicker buds and deeper penetration with 1k's.......but if you have the 1000's already then I agree with the earlier post on aircooling them instead......it will drastically cut down on the AC usage......enough to even maybe add a 600 too.....lol now your cooking with sterno.........I didn't realize the power of aircooling till I saw a dude with 6k for lights and a 12k btu AC for the whole thing. Cooled it to 78 NP.

But enough crazy talk....def not worth ditching the 1ks for 3 new setups.....I always got good results with parabolic hoods and 1ks when i wasn't aircooling. Those big umbrella hoods cover a nice footprint and you can jam them down cuz they disperse the heat very well....and they penetrate. But these days unless you live where its real cold and can get cold air from outside to help cool ur room.....I say aircool......save elec bill cash.....more light!
