I'd take another look at the SW. Besides Arizona, the states are generally very lenient (especially Colorado).
In the more desert SW ( where I have my experience), you have long growing seasons, many areas w/ very low population density, and very little Mj specific law enforcement.
The season will allow for serious growth in the summer, as well as an early start & finish. Sativas can be done here w/ planning...
Spain would be & the top of my list on the international scene. Just watch out for that crop-ruining hemp pollen.

Bro you are right about the midwest this year. I have never in over 10 years of outdoor growing seen the midwest hit so hard. They are pulling a new outdoor plot every week it seems like. Maybe I,m just paying attention more.

Desert SW, eh? That reminds of the scenes from 'No Country for Old Men', the exteriors shot in west Texas. They also shot the oil drilling scenes from 'There will be Blood' out there.
Just miles and miles of nothingness: rolling hills, scrub brush, maybe a stream.
There's no city police, cause no town can afford one. Just the local sheriff, maybe still a one or two man department. And he's really only there for violent crimes, to police the local fights.
But then I'm thinking there are two problems with this:
1. The desert SW is an arid climate. You'd need an irrigation system. More work, more exposure, easier to see from the air. If you don't put in irrigation, you'll need to water those babies every other day. Lot more work, lot more exposure.
2. What if the local sheriff likes to check up on people every now and then? Like every 18-24 months he'll stop by all known residences? Do they do that, or do they generally leave people alone? Can you live your entire life in that county and never ever talk to the sheriff?

It's my understanding that since it has such a high rate of photosynthesis that pot shows up brighter (outdoors) than other foliage and that's what sets them off. Any truth to this.

We really need to get someone who knows FLIR around here. That barry cooper guy seems more interested in getting people's money than keeping them safe (I bit torrented it). If he knew so much about drug enforcement and really cared to share, he would have gotten much further into the whole FLIR topic than he did.

You're right, if flir can detect differences in moisture content of vegetation from the amount of heat they retain, then crops would show up brighter too. Only difference is, you don't see a field of tomatoes or corn in the middle of a forest preserve, right?
Still, I'm thinking that as long as you keep your plant numbers down in any one location, like 30 or less in any one spot, you have a pretty good chance of being passed over. LEO crop choppers are looking for big outdoor grows when they go up in planes or choppers; they're not going to bother with small patches, if they can even see them....
An icmagger named Julian has a very good thread in the outdoor forum here; he recommends having many smaller patches than one large patch...

I also believe that a few busts gets LEO on high alert in these small rural areas causing them to take notice where they may not have before. I was the one who started the “Tomato Bust” thread and I know this small town well and this has never happened before. Cops are on high alert this year because of a couple of bust and now everyone is growing pot according to them.
As far as FLIR goes you will get a whole lot of debate on your question both ways. I do believe it is possible though. I think it was 2 years ago I watched a special about nonnative plants and how they are affecting native species. Well in Hawaii they were using FLIR to pin point a non-native species and then doing copter drops with people to eradicate this stuff. (Don’t remember the plant species)

don't go to hawaii, i seen a documentery on showtime and they had 3 helicopters and about 15 cops pulling crops and the most i seen was 3 or 4 plants at a time, a big waste of money all justified by the war on drugs
kentucky was a different story, 1000's of plants. the cops had to where old clothing cause the buds where so sticky
if it's for personal use stay inside, its your best bet,
if it's for profit montana sounds like the ticket and it is a beautiful state to boot.
