They don't see through anything. All they do is illuminate the heat signature of a given object.
For instance, when you see the helicopter car chase on the news, the camera lights up the hood and the exhaust because those are the hottest objects in the cameras view. When they blow the tires and the guys running on the rims they light up from the heat generated by the friction.

For our purposes they don't actually see the bulb, they see the heat generated by the bulb. If that heat transfers to an outside wall/roof then that is what the camera see's. If the heat is vented out to a roof/wall vent, then that is what it see's. If you have 4 vents on your roof and one is glowing much brighter than the others then that's what they key in on.

So pretty much any quality insulation product will block the heat and render the camera blind. Problem is though is that we have to get rid of the heat somewhere and that's where the problem lies.

Read this and follow the link for some pics that should help explain.

Lead is toxic.

Insulation is where it's at.

The best way to remove heat stealth-like is air-conditioning.

some guy.. thanks for the help and the link..i see the hotspots in that house..

igrohydro.. hey i couldnt get the link to work..???

it would be awesome if some kinda anti flir material would work.. but say its underground below the frost line would lead and insulation and an anti flir material help plus venting the pipe 8 ft. underground. into something like a heating vent pipe. would this help or am i wasting time and money?? thanks for the help..

ps. does concrete block absorb heat??? or show up with a camera??

someguy is on the money.... (+ rep for you!)

FLIR doesn't see through anything, it merely reads the SURFACE TEMPERATURE of objects.

problem is, when you are pumping out 120ish degreee F air through a vent, the vent piping gets hot AND anything (such as the roof that touches that vent) will also begin to heat up.

This is what they see.

James-Bong.. thanks man that helped alot is there anything that is not so heat sensitive?? concrete?? what can i use to render this thing useless

green_tea.. thanks for replying..im at loss right now i have the equipment and materials but im starting to abandoning hope. with out some way of blocking this fucker its a waste of tiime and a risk of losing everything. they fly around here all the time with flir.. thats why i started growing outdoors in the first place... thanks

I'm no expert on this stuff, but if FLIR sees hot spots it seems to me the best way to avoid detection is to diffuse, or spread out, the heat. Insulation around your lights would help at least somewhat. Having multiple outlets for your exhaust would also help. Anything to keep all the heat from being concentrated in one spot.

It doesn't matter what the material is...... if the heat sig is warmer than it's suroundings.....it's gonna show up...

If you are running an underground setup, your best bet would be to heavily insulate the room and then run your exhaust through ducting underground, using the earths natural temperature to cool the air, you'd have to run a lot of ducting (advanced calculations to figure out just how much) then back in to the house and out an attic vent.

Remember just because your whole house shows up the same rather than having a hot spot doesnt mean your whole house doesnt show up as being way hotter than anyone elses.

If you have a normal electric/water bill and your walls are insulated properly you shouldent have a probelm.

If you are really paranoid and your running a cab you could put extra insulation on the walls close to the grow, and especially the ceiling over it.

Windows tranfer heat pretty easily unless you have those fancy expensive ones like airplane glass.
