there's a thread on it from about a month back, lots of opinions, i think a poll too. Don't have the link off the top of my head.

I think opinions were split between 'marketing ploy' and 'it'll made identification easier in mix packs'.

its obviously marketing, but it could also be useful, but i think they could have left like the rooting stuff off

On the face of it kind of seems like a marketing ploy....but if it improves disease resistance, has no negative side effects, not a bad idea.

Kinda depends on how much of an organic fanatic you are! I can see the point for mixed packs. Market ploy with some benefits, and if you're organic, some problems. -Granny

Oh I'm sorry lol, I knew I should have searched..too interesting to not have a thread already made about it. Ah well, I do think the colored seeds used to make variety packs is a good idea though.

I think we all have a mix pack of some kind in our collection and we all wish we could know what we were growing when we planted some seeds from that pack. GHS has now made that possible. I applaud GHS for this contribution & hope other companies take note when making mix packs.

I like the mystery of mixed packs, but that just might be me... All I care is that there are no tropical sats mixed with ghani's or stuff like that.

It reminds me of those infomercials where they have a product and they keep adding on things that it can do. You can tell that a lot of the things weren't even though of when designing the product, but they were like "yeah..and I bet it'll work for this". That's what the colored seeds reminds me of. Started because it looks cool...and then they thought of things that it would be good for. Not saying I wouldn't buy GH gear...but I wouldn't buy it because it looks like a pack of skittles....I'd buy it for genetics.

i voted "whats the Point" but after reading the artical they may be on to something. i guess i just dont like the flashy-ness of it all. greenhouse realy put their funk on it.

Would for sure help in keeping strains in order especially if you mix them up somehow.

Oh yeah, that'd be a life saver. It hasn't happened to me yet but I dread the day that I accidentally mix my seeds up on accident how ever that might happen lol.

Chemical seed coats have existed for over 20 years.

As a result, seeds which were difficult to propagate, have long since implemented seed coating. Cannabis has no need for a seed coating. I guess it's a nice novelty, and unexperienced gardeners will probably say "Gee whiz".

Personally, the only reason I'd ever justify a seed coating, is for seeds that have horrible germination rates, or seeds that need to be planted in the cold (some seed coats won't allow moisture to penetrate until the temperate has reached 55F). Corn, soy and cannabis don't have much use for seed coating. These seeds are known for solid germination rates.

This doesn't mean that there aren't companies trying to sell seed coatings for every plant imaginable.

We've tested three different seed coatings for tomatoes, and they all gave us worse germination rates than uncoated tomato seeds (all seeds were planted under ideal conditions). This wasn't a surprise, because tomato seeds already have a phenomenal germination rate (just like Cannabis).

Fully-developed Cannabis seeds should give you >90% success when exposed to the right environment. (High temps + High humidity = Happy seeds)

This is the issue I have with coated Cannabis seeds: Why force the plant to evolve around a man-made invention??? You can't beat nature. I fear that Cannabis breeders will use these coatings as a crutch and lose focus on the seed's integrity. I don't want to be stuck with Cannabis strains which will only germinate after being treated with chemicals. This has already happened with some seeds. Many agricultural breeders no longer focus on creating strong, hardy seeds.

I hope it's a fad in the Cannabis industry.
