4'' or 6'' pots for SOG?

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with 4'' pots for their SOG grow with no veg, str8 to flower.
Most people use 6 inch and my guess is because the plants have more space to grow but I would still be curious to see a SOG grow in 4'' containers.
anyone has any pics?

If you can fit more than twice the amount of plants in a square foot with 4'' compared to 6'' then it might have potential.

Cutting a fan leaf or two on a couple of plants cant really hurt if it is absolutly necessary.

I bought 5" and Ill be using them first.

Just like a month veg from seed, then flower in a SOG ebb & flow setup.

keep your plants really small if you plan on using 4" pots...if you do you should be alright. Personally, I use and suggest the 6" square pots...for me 4 plants per square foot is the magic number...and I assure you it will out perform 9psf all day long.

have you ever tried 4 inch pots albert?

Yes, I've run 4", 5", 6", 8", no pot. 4 & 5" pots are too densely packed and the plant numbers are off the charts...plus less yield IME. 8" were too big for my grow style. Open bed is a nightmare. 6" was just right. :rasta:

When you say open bed, do you mean like how I have mine setup? What kind of problems did you have?

I beg to differ. You cannot assure that IMO.

On a 3x3 Ebb/flow table you can have 81, 4 incher's. Or you can have 36, 6 incher's. As another member wisely said, if the plants a kept small and trimmed ie. as single spikes, then overcrowding should not occur.

This bloke does 216 4 inchers.

Well, since you have used 10K as your rebuttal example, I will assume that you don't have any experience yourself. That is a great example of 9psf and how well it can work when you maintain it. I will stick by my original post...

Albert, I have the same question as Yamaha. I'm interested in the answer becasue, just last night, I set up to run open bed. Hydrotron over lava rock. I ran 6" pots, they are not big enough for what I'm trying to do. I tried 10"square mesh pots filled with Hydrotron but it limits me to 6 pots in a 2X3 tub. I wanted to try running it like Yamaha.....on a much smaller scale, with a SCROG screen to help hold everything in place.
Here's a shot of the 6" and the 10" pots

I run (2) 2x3 tubs side bide side under a 1000 watt running to havest a tub each month.

Thanks!

Yes, like your setup...before I go any further, I know there are some open bed die hards around and I'm not looking to offend anyone. For me, I just liked the ability to pull individual plants out without stressing the plants around it. Also, I found that I had a greater number of plants that just didn't go...they wre overgrown by stronger plants around it (there are always clones that are strongest). Since I use an aero cloner, the transplant is also a PIA. This is the recipe that works for me...there are other very effective methods...I just rarely see them produce high enough numbers :badday:

Hey Murphy,
for a smaller setup such as yours, where you are talking about a couple plants and perhaps a scrog, then I can see greater benefits to an open bed...

I don't have experience on that sort of scale, no.

I don't see how you can assure people that 4psf will out-yield 9psf any day, merely because that happened to be the case for you.

Experience...get some and then comment

One of the biggest problems on this forum is people taking what they do themselves as either gospel or a general rule. A truly experienced grower would not make that mistake.

Let me understand you clearly. Are you saying 6 inchers always yield more because a lack of overcrowding?

And see I thought the problem with this site was inexperienced newb growers that continually argue with experienced growers that have tried and tested these methods already...Since you clearly cannot read, let me make this clear. A 4psf garden will OUTPERFORM a 9psf garden. OUTPERFORM means yield, time it takes to run the garden, reliability, risk vs return (plant numbers), etc. My suggestion to you would be to try a couple of these methods and see where you end up. Don't believe me, I think 10K might still be around...see if he/she is still doing it the same way...bet not.

I have never done 4" but having run 6" pots and 6" on center in an open bed, I cant see cramming them in there any tighter. Even after lollipopping, they are pretty tight.

I have also seen other threads where most agreed 6" was the optimum sizing.

Just what I have read and what I have experienced.

BTW If Albert says he has tried it and finds 6" to be better, I would bank on it.

I really enjoy these types of disagreements. Very imformative stuff emerges. It accomplishes something not like the arguments about where/who a strain is from.

I apologise for misunderstanding. I meant no disrespect. I assumed you were talking soley about yield. Again, I apologise.
