The tats and piercings, well if they're common in your area probably no one will get too suspicious. No one will confuse you for an uptight white collar dude but whatever, whenever I see a dude like that I think he might be into ecstasy and acid, maybe even heroin, but growing doesn't immediately come to mind.
What will make your neighbors suspicious, besides the obvious like light leaks and odors, is when you tell them you're a GC but you never leave the house.
Don't GC's, like most construction workers, leave at 7 in the morning and come back at 5 in the afternoon? And have trucks and tools? If you're story is that you're a GC but you're always home, don't seem to have a truck or tools or much knowledge about construction, then they might be like 'uhhh, I don't think this guy is what he says he is...' Whether that will lead them to think you're involved in growing/illegal activities, I don't know. It's not enough for a warrant for police "officer, I think my neighbor is lying about his occupation..." but it might make them more suspicious...
My two cents. :joint:

Very good point here.

I understand that different parts of the country see things differently but in my state when you see someone with long hair, tats and piercings over 30 yrs of age you get a first impression of someone on the outskirts of society.

Neighbors and most people are polite to your face but always have second thoughts behind your back its natural. I do not interact with my neighbors more than waves and how the hell are you. Even after 6 yrs I don’t know shit about them and take all my knowledge of them via looks. The car they drive, what their yard looks like, what they look like. People infer a lot from the superficial things so buyer beware.

I never meant to say you cannot express yourself but there is a price (behind your back) whether you accept it or not.

Yeah, in Chicago you can get a GC license without any sort of certification or licensing in a trade (electrician, plumber, carpenter, etc). So you can drive a corolla and wear a shirt and tie carry a briefcase and still be a contractor.
Maybe the only thing you have to worry about is if your neighbors ask you to give them discounts on jobs they need done - might not be a bad idea to get in good with them if you don't mind the hassle... :rasta:
As far as stocks don't have many tips other than read read read: WSJ, the Economist, etc. Maybe start some mock trading - best to test the waters before you dive right in.

I've got the stoner look. Personally, I'd describe it as the movie star look. I've got long hair for a guy, it's almost down to my shoulders, I just about always keep an unkept beard, and I wear casual clothes.

I started the look when I was put on probation. It was a sort of 'if I can't smoke, I'm going to keep it real and stay connected with stoner roots.'

i rock the cop look.....navy blue cop style car, big mirrored man-with-no-eyes sunglasses, neat conservative dress, short cropped hair, lean and in shape....but no big cop-stache....i never worry about being profiled....i hear "are you in the military?" or something similar about 3 times a week.....my red droopy eyes and the lingering haze smell often give me away however....

Yea it matters dude. I used to have piercings and my tats can be covered. I didn't have long hair but I did have a beard, not a regular beard a messy one...EVERYONE knew I smoked when I did that, and that is just the way it is. People will always make jusdgements.

Now, I have to be more careful I dress is nice clothes and am very clean cut. Fools neo every time. I get more respect and I get less attention...actually A LOT less attention. Not being noticed when walking into a room...I love it, it's a lot easier to do things like growing...

If it wasn't like this I would probably look however I wanted but to me its a small price to pay...

If you're over 1000w per TAXED BEDROOM plus whatever your regular appliances are... worry. That's a lot, unless you're in a fancy shmantzy 6br condo!

As for appearance/style... one of my buddies rocks the plugged ears, lip stud, full sleeve, beard look- but in a very carefully maintained young hip biker kinda way. His hair is cropped short and worn under a bandana, and his beard is clipped very close, sometimes with the edges shaved into unusual shapes. Yeah, I find it rather hot. I don't look at him and think 'stoner'; I look at him and then look out the window for a Harley. Which is sitting there actually, lol. On the other end, I know another guy who grows decent scale who also has the plugged ears and beard, but also has really long hair which he often wears in a topknot, sumo-style... with some loose, Eastern-influenced clothing and sandals, he looks more like a mystic than a cashcropper. I'd assume him to get hassled by The Man at traffic stops, but dismissed as too hippy-dippy to be worrisome. I should ask him soemtime lol.
There are other styles that work well with body art; go hang out at the hippest coffeehouse you can think of, and just watch the world go by, and play pot-or-not. Take notes on the 'not'. ; )

Last time I got pulled over the cop smelled the bag of weed I had on me but I never hesitated saying I didnt smoke pot when he asked.

He scanned his flashlight to look for other evidence and when he couldnt find it and I looked clean cut he let me on my way. Even got a warning on the moving violation he pulled me over to begin with. Now I cruise with tupperware. No scent = no questions.

Looking clean cut is like its own jedi mind trick .. these arent the drugs youre looking for.*wave*

if you're only in your early 20's IMO people will be skeptical about you owning your own business. that type of thing takes time to accumulate capital, experience, and respect (from others in the industry if u plan on being successful)

i don't mean to rain on your parade but that not a very good coverup. say that you WORK for a company is one thing. but owning one that survives is another. banks know this. owning a company with no record of a startup loan also looks odd. where would u say the money came from to start your biz?

could use the private investor story....or you could say you won some money at the casino a couple times under the amount that triggers the casino to get your ssn and information. then report the money as winnings and use that as your business startup. seems petty but you can win up to $5000 at a poker table and not have to file anything at the casino. although you are supposed to file that as taxable income but there would be no record that you won or didn't win that money since it was under the 5000. If you are creative enough you can explain startup money for a business

I have long hair, and a full beard and deal with customers everyday. (I'm an HVAC mechanic) I personally think that most people don't give a shit what you look like, they care more about attitude, personality, knowledge, etc. And to the people who do judge by appearance alone, I say F--K YOU

Good for you and I mean that but as a commercial grower this guy can't afford to say FU. Actually most business owners can never afford to say FU and if you don’t treat this like a business you will fail. Its rare to be in a position to say FU but also nice.

I must say life's a lot easier since I got to be a balding middle aged man with a 'pot' belly. Cops don't look at me once anymore, much less twice. They really do have their little profile thing, and if you don't fit the 'criminal' bill you just skate on by. Can't count the times they missed the big fish because they had to hassle the young black guy in the droopy shorts or the hippies with peace sign bumper stickers. The downside is nobody ever offers to share anymore. It's not unlikely that you might just shit your pants if I walked into the room when you were taking a hit. Anyway, it's not like I tried to look like this, it just happened over time. Pattern baldness and long hair (what's left) just don't work together IMO.

I have the whole clean shaven redneck look. Jeans and a polo - my trusty hat too most of the time.

But yeah, I think that if you stand out amongst what society has deemed normal (not that normal really has any meaning) I think that the pigs will definitely give you a second look. Just like racial profiling.

I could care less. I like people who are who they want to be.

I don't like to be judged by my appearence, I cut my dreads off and now it seems like people presume less about me. Sad to lose my dreads but they began to define me, first to other people and then because of the way they viewed me it began to define me to myself. The dreads had to go but I was sad to see them fall
