Usually, I like to make some seed, but do not always have the resources to grow out all the boys.
So, I look for things early on which to make judgements on which to cull(the usual things ; smell, growth, vigor,etc.).
I have recently added a new criteria; ROOT GROWTH!
Since the best yielding plants always have the nicest root systems(IMHO).
So after evaluation on the other criteria, I now check the root ball development.
I figured this would be a valid and possibly overlooked selection point.
Any thoughts??

you have to evaluate many different characteristics. i think its best to consider things in groups...i would start with easily quantifiable characteristics like dried bud weight, days to maturity, rate of growth, diameter of main stem, time to germ, etc. Next i would consider less quantifiable things that can still sorta be measured...nute usage/sensitivity, ease of cloning, branchiness, root growth, hardiness/resistance to shock/disease/etc. last but most certainly not least i would weigh the more subjective things like taste, aroma, potency, smoke expansiveness, harshness, etc. What you must do is rate the things you value most higher than the others....if you run many many plants seeking a mother this method with a formula weighted to your own individual prefernces to score the ladies would be useful. Do something like...rate each area on a scale of 1 to 10, give double points for things you consider important....

oh yea, ROOT=BUDS without a doubt. small root-systems can do it too, but its a harder chore.

thats a perfect rooball.

It has been proven that roots grow most during the dark cycle, and that 18/6 light cycle produces the most root growth. I personally use a 19.5/4.5 cycle.

CMH = more root growth than HPS.

Alot of people think you need to transplant from small pot to larger pot to create a better root ball. I think this theory has no backing. I just put it straight in the large pot and get crazy good growth all around.

Just some random thoughts.

actually micro "alot" of real plant pathologist have proven though scientific studies that your "theory" is just a theory....people should really try reading some books and published papers about plant growth...before testing there own theories...a good place to start on the subject of "roots" is "Plant production in containers by carl e whitcomb...
