Frequent consumers of energy drinks are more likely to engage in several forms of risky or abusive behavior, according to a study by the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions.
Scientist Kathleen Miller focused on people who consume six or more energy drinks per month.
She found that they were three times more likely to have abused prescription drugs, participated in a serious physical fight or smoked cigarettes during the 12 months leading up to the study period.
People who frequently drink energy drinks were twice as likely as nonconsumers to drink alcohol or use marijuana. And they had higher-than-normal rates for other forms of risk-taking, including unsafe sex, not using a seatbelt, participating in an extreme sport and doing something dangerous on a dare.
Miller's study group consisted of 795 students, both male and female, at Western New York colleges. Thirty-nine percent reported consuming at least one energy drink per month.
The study was funded by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
