Y: I noticed you were using "tape" on the ez-cloner to identify different clones. You're obviously doing an excellent job keeping track...however I thought I might suggest the use of plastic colored "party toothpicks" to identify clones. I have a bunch of different types, and I've earmarked each strain & phenotype with a particular color. May be markedly easier than "taping" and allows you to move the clones around at your leisure.
Examples cited below:

O: Plants being exposed to light outdoors with regularity may experience "hermaphrodism" and develop male flowers...as well as stunted flowering. You'll get "something" but it may not be what you'd optimally get under controlled circumstances.

Hey O, I've seen peoples' outdoor gardens damaged by proximity to security lights- either a serious delay in flowering, or hermies. I don't know how strong that light is, but the less the better.
Great pics everyone!

thanx wamen nice shots urself bro.

O,yes theyre happy i think they seem to sense theres gonna be no shortage of love around here.;)

access-wattup pimp, thanks for the advice brotha...if you look close,in the second pic you can see some tags i made outta some mini blinds.i can write on them and the curve fits perfectly around the e-z cloner inserts...here check it out.

i used the tape for a long time but i think this will work out better.also you can cut the blinds longer and cut a pointy tip and use them in the big pots.i forget whose thread i saw that in.thats what gave me the idea to use them in the cloner..worked out perfect yo.peace.

Hey Brothers and Sisters

Question for you all regarding clones.

What effect does strain have on cloneability?

reason I ask, side by side comparison between Lifesaver and the bag seed Umberger Orange. Lifesaver clones like a dream in my machine, but I just had to take another round of Uorange clones as the first did not take.

both were taken from nice soft branches, same everything.

thoughts?

There's definitely a correlation between strains and "cloneability". Unfortunately I don't think there's a definitive answer as to 'what strain' works better or worse except for people's history and opinions.
Alot depends on the actual cell structure of the particular strain...some is determined by core genetics (structure of the genes), some is dictated by epigenetic modification (function of the genes in response to chemicals, nutrients, environment, age, etc.). I've found that the longer I work with a particular strain, the "better" the cuttings respond. Originally everything I work with starts in either soil or coco....I've noticed over time that the initial cuts I take are kind of weak and wispy.....after transferring the clones to rockwool or hydroton (the latter being my preference)....the plant becomes more "deciduous" (woody) and the topmost cloning sites become more hearty.

I know for a fact people will have variable opinions about this: most people suggest taking 'non-woody' lateral shoots. I've had more success taking the opposite. There's also less of a "mush" factor when developing roots and more of the actual plant tissue can be utilized as nutrients in the interim while roots are taking shape.

Essentially: I feel the plants adapt at a cellular level in response to their medium....so they "toughen" and "harden" up with subsequent cuts and more mature growth patterns. I've found this to be true with every strain I've ever worked with....

It's true that some genetics are just inferior, and those plants are weaker and just don't make the "cut"....but those get phased out in favor of better gals.
