What's new

Way off wet to dry yield numbers...

I just harvested a plant whose flowers all looked like this...

My yield wet was just under 6 oz.
I was expecting a dry yield of 3 oz... safe bet...
Got a dry yield of 1 oz!!! ...WTF!!!
You tellin me I dried off 5 oz of WATER!!!! :jawdrop:

All nugs were so tight I was very worried about mold, and now that they're dry they're still tight, but definitely not nearly as tight as they were.

If anyone might have an opinion as to what the hell happened, please feel free to chime in.

Here are a few more pics of the plant to help...

I don't know why you figgured you would only lose 1/2 the weight, I usually get 20-35% wet to dry. It also matters how wet/dry the plant/medium are when you cut. I let them go bone dry before I cut so that they dry more quickly.

6oz x 20% = 1.2oz

EDIT - Try re-calibrating your scale. It's tough to tell, but that plant looks like it should have been more than a zip. How much light? What strain? Dirt? Pot size? How long in flower? (lose A LOT of weight if you cut early)

Barletta,

Thanks for the response. The plant was bone-ass dry before chop, I have one of those soil multi-meters and the moisture reading was between 1-2 out of 10. During their life cycle, I usually water at 3, at 3 they start to droop a little, at 2 the go limp. So, I think I let them dry out pretty good.

Strain is unknown bagseed. Let's say sativa indica mix LOL
Light 52wx4 bulb T-5 and 100W HPS.
Dirt: MG Potting Soil (don't have access to anything better) that I flush the hell out of before I use it.
Pot Size: 3 Gal Tall
You didn't ask, but Veg Time: 2 mos
Flower Time: 52 Days (46 days flower, 7 flush) went by the trichs though approx 10% amber.

I was concerned about the early cutting though; last harvest I let her go for the full 60 days then flushed for 7 days and the couchlock was unreal. Thought about naming her knockout, cause after you smoked her, that's pretty much all you did. Someone suggested cutting her a little earlier, and the high is much better, but is this what I can expect for future yields?

Yeah, 20-35% seems to be what I end up with, but I haven't weighed anything wet in a while. Just seemed to be disappointing lol. With the way that you your set up and an unknown seed, I'd say that 1-2 oz is probably right. I think that to hit 1 oz per gallon (3oz) in str8 mg soil, you would have to have the rest of the set up pretty much dialed, or have a very heavy strain. You could probably bump yield 20-30% if you added perlite, vermic, kelp and worm castings (less than $20) OR seed STARTER soil mix (lowest/no nutes), vermic and plant tone (under $20)

Sounds a tiny tad light but, you did OK. I do the water cure and lose around 85% of the weight.

Oh well, I guess I was a little over-expectant. I thought this was as good as I could do with this strain, but I guess I have a little ways more to go...:bashhead:...At least I raised the bar for myself a bit. :kos:

you thought u'd get 3OZ out of that???thats the first problem, 'high' asperations...
yup...the less you expect, the more you'll be pleased

I don't know why anyone weighs their WET weed. In this game you'd better have some patience.

yeah they do look nice :respect:
do you have closer shots though ?

i don't weigh while wet because there is really no reason for it
except to get ones self dissapointed :joint:
just magine the cost of the one oz you did get, thats money saved !!

I look at it from the other angle. You lose about 80% of the wet weight when dried. That's pretty dead on with (the 20%-22% of the wet weight) eyes method of calculating. Peace...........RD

I always drop around 75% when dry but thats 25% of bomb weed so that still cool .

"High" all, I hadn't heard anything in a while, so I left this thread for dead...

I have come to realize the error of my ways with the wet weighing. However, my reason for doing it was not to get my hopes up, but rather to get an idea of wet to dry yield ratios for future reference. I knew that they were going to loose a bunch of weight, but I was told by other friends to expect a loss of 50%, not 80%, so I was a bit thrown off by my findings.

However, what I have learned from several of the more seasoned growers here is that "my friends are full of :cuss:"

Thanks Barletta, your formula is pretty much spot on. That's almost exactly what I got out of her. I actually did a bit better than that final trim (1.5oz all in all) so I'm happy with my results.

they are phat dense looking nugs though, props on that.

Coming from someone who has been around the block as many times as you, that makes me feel like a :pimp3:
Respect to you brother....

My reason for doing it is whenever I have "extras" I'll get rid of it for some play money. I don't deal or anything, its nothing much, and it's just between friends. I just wanted a way to figure out in advance what I'm talking about in terms of dry yield. If I know I'm gonna need a half a week so 2oz a month, and I know I'm gonna have 3 oz lying around, gives me heads-up time to get rid of the rest.

Sorry, and I didn't take any dried shots either... :badday:

Hey all, again thanks for all of your contributions, I appreciate all of your feedback and information. It's always a quest... to know more... to do better...to honor this gift we have received from God...

Great Highs and Fat Nugs to you all!!!!
