alright so between 3 different grow ops my friends and i are running, i thought we should try 3 different soil mixes until we perfect it. how's this look for one of them?

one bag organic scott's top soil with added peat
half bag humus (40lb bag)
one bag dmf earth castings
one-two bags schulz perlite
2 tbs. pelletized dolomite lime/gal

that amount of lime would be overkill dont you think? i thought it was 2 tbs per gal and a cup per cubic foot.

That pelletized lime won't work. You need powdered for it to mix thoroughly and work fast enough. And as stated above, it's 2 tbs./gal.
You'd be much better off using one of LC's Mixes from the beginners sticky.

can you mash the pellets into powder? i may go back and return it then if you can't. also got the wrong measurements, meant 2 tbs./gal...

I use the same lime when i use peat moss, mixed at 2 tbs per gallon of peat, and have had no problems.

remember, this mix ain't for me. yes i understand pelletized won't work, but if i mash it, then it becomes pulverized, so that should work.

btw, where you can you get promix or sunshine?

i wouldn't have supported wal-mart at all, but my friends need cheap options. in the future, i will be running moonshine mix hopefully.

hasent this forum come to the conclusion pelletized works just as good? within seconds of it hittin water it disolves into a powder i know i have tried it with my own pellets. just wetting, mixing every now and then and letting the mix set for a week or two (like most do anyways) would just make them dissolve and mix into the soil.

You come here asking for advice but you don't listen to the experts' advice very well do you?

The cheapest option, and the best option, is to use LC's #1 mix. Why spend all that money on commercial bagged soil mixes?

this site is filled with so many assholes... back the fuck up! i don't have time for you haters, it's just not economical in my books.

yeah lc's mix is dope, but i don't like heavy peat mixes. coir is a bitch to handwater because i've used that as well.

i was trying to ask you guys about #2 and where i can get the sunshine or promix because i'd rather go that way personally. then i won't use the top soil and add in humus to help buffer ph.

jaykush - since you've been here for a while, i will not crush my pellets up.

Here's what I would tell you about LC's #2 mix. I know it works because I have done it.

LC's #2 mix will work well with ANY decent potting mix that doesn't contain any of the time release ferts, etc. There is no need to buy FFOF, Happy Frog or any of those over priced mixes, especially if you are having it shipped. The stuff that is sold with a breakdown something like:

50-60% compost
35-25% sphagnum peat
15% perlite

They'll be some variance in the ratios, but potting soil with roughly that composition will be locally available for most of you. And any of them will work to make LC's #2 mix.
