You would probably be better off having them sandblasted and then painted with a quality titanium white high temp paint. But yeah, sanding is ok too. Just try to get as much of the rust off as is humanly possible.

ya.. u can usually get like a rust inhibitor paint aswell that goes on like a base coat on the hood. That should stop it. But just so you know.. once rust starts its like an object. The 'veins' go deep into and along the metal so it usually reoccurs. Try remove at least a cm passed where the rust ends and it should be fine.. if possible of course!
