purple: environment or genetics?

quick question guys...

i'm growing out some bagseed and it is turning purple in late harvest. my thinking is that this must be due to some genetic factors as the temp at night never goes below 71 degrees (i've heard cold temps cause purple coloring.)

so would i be correct in saying that i have a strain that has a tendency to turn purple in many cases or is there another environmental factor that could be causing it.

thanks

You are correct.
Sometimes it is genetic, sometimes it is temperature.
Sometimes both!

I agree with dongle!

This was purple caused by cold temps:

This one is genetics:

It's all genetic. Environment can influence the genetics, but the environment is not making the plant turn purple.

I read the other day someone said phosphorus cannot be utilzed in the plant at cold temps and it's basically a phosphorus deficiency (or rather inability to use the phosphorus already in the plant) that brings out the anthocyanin (sp?) pigmentation.

I'm not really sure I believe this. I mean a P def will exhibit purpleing but nothing as severve as a "purple" predisposed plant IMO.

ah well temps aren't dipping lower than 72 lights off and im giving this bitch plenty of P... i'm thinking its genetic purpling. this is going to be my first harvest and this bag seed is turning out to be super killer lookin nice fat buds with trichs just coating the bitch... the smell is super fruity but in a way i can't figure out what it exactly smells like. took a bunch of clones hehe

Sorry Raoul, but purpling is usually the plant producing a pigment that acts like antifreeze and is a reaction to cold conditions. Most cannabis can produce this pigment. Some cannabis is purple naturally, regardless of temperature, I'm not sure if this is the same pigment or a different one.
