Clones from unsexed parent?

Guest

Hi, I was just wondering if I take clones from an unsexed plant will they be male & female. I got a feeling that plants dont make up their mind till the last minute whether they will be male or female, so is it the same for clones. I know its a different story once the parent has shown flowers, the clones will be same sex. Any thoughts on this?
cheers.

take clones before they indicate. put 1 of them into 12/12 so that it shows. once the flowering clone indicates, you know the others to be identical.

Thanks, are you sure? I always believed canna was asexual until preflowers, & even then they can change. Interesting one.

i had a strange thing happen once... i had sprouted a seed and let it get about 12-14 inches tall, took a clone, and threw that clone into flowering... it turned out 100% male. for some reason though, the donor plant just seemed female to me - even though it had yet to show sex - so i took another clone, flowered that clone, and sure as shit... female... 100%!! the mother plant continued to give female clones from that point on, and eventually showed her feminine side as well.

i don't know the science behind any of this, so i can't explain it, but that's how it happened for me ... but only that one time with that one plant

perhaps in rare occasions a plant could be stressed either way. but most likely only in the case of that plant having herm tendencies.

someone else chime in because i don't think that's the norm

Yeah... most of the time, they will stick to the sex of the mother.. male or female. But just like some people in this world... they will have a sex change, haha. It's very uncommon though, and usually induced by a stressful enviroment of some type or its genes!!
