Whats wrong with these clones?

This happened only 12 hours after putting them in coco. They're AK47 cuts i took from 2 diferent moms i'm growing in coco. The coco is well hydrated, and i dipped the tips of the cuttings in root tech gel. what would cause cuttings to wilt so fast? The stems are like rubber!

Are they under a dome?

They need a humid environment. I mist mine with wilt-pruf, cut the fans back to 1" or less, and put them under a dome that has been misted on the inside. Also, remember that strong light means fast water loss through transpiration. A single 'daylight' CFL is more than enough- keep it at least a foot from the clones until they are well rooted.

No, no dome. This was kinda a last ditch effort with AK47 clones as i just had a dozen cuts turn grey and shrivel up in my aero cloner. Yeah, its a single 'daylight' cfl, the 26 watter that puts out 100watts wrth of light. and its at least a foot away.
They're not dry at all, neither is the coco. The stems feel like a rubber band.
I'm gonna see what kind of 'dome' i can come up with...

If you can't get Wilt-pruf right away, getting them under a dome asap is most important. Also, cut some drain holes in the bottom of your cups - you want the coco to drain.

Since your cutting has no roots, the moisture in the coco isn't doing you much good right now because the cuttings have no roots to uptake that moisture. Right now the cuttings are relying on their leaves for intaking moisture, hence the need for the dome. Below is a photo of a clone with the leaves trimmed. You should trim your leaves in the same fashion and then use some small sticks (I use chop sticks) to support the cuttings until they will again stand on their own.

Hey Evl,

What has worked for me countless times in the past is.... go to your local hardware store and buy one of those jiffy planter domes that comes with the jiffy pellets... they're not too expensive and you can get them in various sizes.

When taking a couple clones just throw a couple of those pellets in water until they swell up... cut your clones and push them down into the pellets, squish them in there on the sides (to make contact with the stem) and place them in your dome under low lighting.

Mist them twice a day and within about 7-10 days you should have roots.... haven't had one die on me yet. :)

cut the fan leaves in half your clones have no roots they need all the help they can get they dont need to be keeping all the leaves going . make sure they are humid cut a plastic bottle in half or put a glass over them you should see condensation around the inside of your dome . as you will know you should not over water your plants but this dosnt mean you should let your clones dry out make sure these babies are really wet all the time.

PC has a good point re: the drain holes. Clones need plenty of O2 to the root zone to grow roots before the stems rot.

It's quite common for clones to act like that the first day - especially young green fast growing shoots because they're totally unlignified and only holding their shape because of the water pressure inside the plant. I would use a dome though - I've had better success with than without.

If you cant get a dome fast, try misting them and rubberband clear sandwich baggies over them. Just try not to let the leaves touch the sides. Thats a pretty quick simple fix.

the rubber is from them using up all the sugar that hardens the stems. they are dying but they can come back to life which is the case in all cuttings. a dome will keep them from drying and keep the stems hard.
