Can you prune roots?

A friend asked me to help him clorex his plants in his aeroponic system while he was away. The roots were all intertwined and growing down into the reservoir drain, so I cut them a little to free them up, but I may have cut too much. I think it stunted their growth is that possible? :spank:

You may have put the plants into shock, just give em some time.

You can prune roots. I do it all the time. I don't trim too much at a time and after I soak it with water and some B1.

If you cut off the tip of a root, side-shoots will begin to grow off of it. Just like topping a plant. Why not?

when you prune roots in plants that are potted in containers with soillessmix or soil, its how you make bonzai bushes and such. i keep 3 mothers in a 3 spuare foot veg/mom cab with a 150 watt light and i always prune roots to make the plants stunted and bonzai. well not stunted but it keeps them branches tight and the overall plant is smaller than usuall. i keep them in 1.5 gallon containers and every 2 months i trim away about 1.5" and each side of the root ball(square pots) and add fresh soil to make up for the rootball that i trimmed. and the roots will grow into the new soil and 2 months later it get pruned againt, the roots that is.

no set backs brow i just trimed them a little bit so they did not tangle to each other i veged for 2 - 3 weeks under 430 hps maybe trimed 6" total of roots over that time when i put them into flower root systesm exploded HUGE they are growing the exact same if not what seems more tigher nodes and same size as the ones veged with out root trim so perhaps this maybe benafit in DWC? i am not saying this for sure as i need to test this more.

btw i had 2x 18 gallon sterilites with 8x 5" netpots in each

Pruned roots near the end of flower...ooops?

I thought that maybe I stunted the plants growth, because I pruned the roots near the end of the flowering cycle and maybe they didn't have time to recover.

In his 8-pot aeroponic system, I couldn't pull the plants/net pots out individually all 6 plant-roots were stuck together to the lid. Its a very tight fit in that aero root chamber. I wounder, if I can design dividers for the chamber, to keep the roots apart next time? :joint:

Here's what the plants looked like.

Thanks GF im worried about going root bound as my ladies have about 2 months of veg prolly but only about a month in the system.. We'll see how it turns out :joint:

pruning roots is very easy and does wonders at controlling growth and sometimes re stimulating plants to grow as well.. such as a REVEG...

I suggest doing this for mothers a few times a year...

it does shock the plant .. but it should come back days later..

This thread from Guerilla is awesome for what your asking, imvho. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=31919

Awesome step by step instructions on bonsai mothers. He explains root pruning as well, with nice photo's.
