New Study Suggests Cannabis Shrink Brain Parts

I use Mnemosyne to counter any long and/or short term memory loss effects.

I would like to also add:

google news commentMore proof that marijuana is safer than alcohol - 23 hours ago

The headline on some versions of this story is misleading, as this study was not designed to prove cause and effect. Whether the very heavy marijuana use by these individuals caused the somewhat smaller volume in these two brain regions remains unknown. More important is that this study provides yet more proof that marijuana is far safer than alcohol. It takes ultra-sensitive MRI to find any evidence at all that marijuana may have problematic effects on the brain, even in extraordinarily heavy users, while in people who drink comparable quantities of alcohol, all you need is a postal scale: The brain literally shrinks rather dramatically, and the effects on cognition are severe. There is no scientific justification for laws that treat marijuana more harshly than beer, wine and liquor.

hooray for research. :rasta:

I read the whole thing and I think its funny how they say if you DONT smoke 15 joints a day there is little effect on your brain...sooo I dont think I could smoke 15 joints a day for ten years anyways so I think i'll be ok!
what they should have done is take the guys who are smoking 15 joints and put them up against guys who are drinking 15 shots of bourbon and SEE who can remember shit! I'm pretty sure the smokers would win any test they throw at them.
stupid test...dont you just love the bannor for the article "pot shrinks brain!" "new test confirms" what a bunch of BS...if you do a lot of ANYTHING your going to have some health issue. they need to get a life. :cuss:

I usually take all these "studies" tongue in cheek. But I saw this on the news at noon. No mention was made of:
Among the 15 heavy marijuana users in the study, the hippocampus volume was 12 percent less and the amygdala volume was 7 percent less than in 16 men who were not marijuana users, the researchers said.

I saw the thing and at first thought,"12% and 7%? I smell bullshit. Now I see 15 users and 16 non-users. Mega-bullshit. Biased? Jaded? Science my ass. Now I'm pissed. How is MMJ ever going to get accepted with shit like this going on?

long terms study tokers vs alcohol, tokers on the left. you'll notice that the tokers have at least retained a youthful appearance:

How is MMJ ever going to get accepted?

With stuff like this going on! If anyone brings up this study, counter with these three studies! (Funny how they never made it on the news!)

All we gotta do is educate folks and counteract all the BS! No, it's no impossible, it can be done! When I found that cannabis got rid of my migraines, some 40 years ago, there was no such thing as medical marijuana. Now about 1/4 of the states have some form of MMJ. Somewhere between 70 and 85% of the American public now believes that MMJ should be available for those who need it. Change is in the wind.

Now, click the link in my sig and read- then become an activist/educator! Your opinions may be persuasive, but there is nothing like being able to back up your argument with a few well-chosen studies!

I gathered them- you guys use them! OK?

Thanks Granny, yes we WILL use them potentially in a future debate. I am not writing these down, but most likely I would go to ICMAG and just search for something in the text of this message.

Like research, or "mmj studies" or "marijuana science" or "marijuana research" or "marijuana scientific research" or "scientific research marijuana" or "marijuana activist science research" or "scientific studies marijuana".

(just making things easier for future me)

I have debate marijuana versus alcohol with many of my friends through the years. Unfortunately I think ALL of them were already persuaded! But I was dealing with a younger audience. In fact without trying to, I've met people who were already smoking pot, and I was the one who DIDN'T smoke it (I was getting piss-tested back then).

I can't remember if I've ever debated anyone who really believed in Prohibition fervently.

I do remember an older, conservative woman who started confiding in me when I was working with her. She confided that she had voted for G. W. Bush, so it was no surprise when she said she found a potted plant on a remote section of her land (we're talking acreage), and was afraid it was (GASP) marijuana! I don't know why she was telling me but maybe she sensed at some level that I was a toker at heart, even though I hadn't toked in over 20 years at the time. She asked me what I thought, and I told her it was probably just college kids and not to worry about it too much. She told me she had called the sheriff and they came over and seized it. I don't think they bothered staking out the location because it was just one plant.
