Just got a baby Ball Python on Friday....sooo cute.

About big enough to fill the palm of yer hand when curled up....will get about 5 feet when mature, and will probably live at least 25 years.

We opted for a snake as my wife is allergic to fur, and we all love snakes...esp my 6 year old daughter.

It's name is Dreyfuss, and I will try to put up some pics at some point soon.

i wish they could stay small ... the are so cool when they are little like that, the skin on them is far out.

I personally love huge snakes, but don't have the facilities to keep them...I live in a duplex, lol.

Would love to get a species that does get big one day, like an Indian Rock Python or some such.

A friend of mine who lives in the UK owns one of the 5 largest snakes in captivity in the world....she is about 29 feet long, weighs over 300 lbs and her head is 18" long.

She can eat sheep, but usually gets fed giant Belgian rabbits that weigh about 35 lbs a piece.

Be careful as ball pythons are escape artists. They are extremely friendly and dont ever get beyond a managable size. One of my buddies has a 6ft9inch rainbow boa, and an 12 ft long albino python. The boa eats large rats, and the python eats rabbits. You should see the ablino under a black light, its bad as heel to see and albino snake eat a white rabbit under a black light. Its worth noting that watching the smaller snakes feed is fun, but when they get big and their roof nail sized fangs hit a rabbit and it squrits blood onto the cage........you are almost at a loss of words.

I wanted to get a ball python a while ago, until I found out how long they live, I did not think it would be fair to teh animal, that I was not prepared to make that long of a commitment.

But cool for you, I am kind of envious

You are right Dr. Dog. Most marriages don't last 25 years. If you get divorced, who gets the snake?

That's pretty bad ass, man. I wouldn't mind having a snake of some sort eventually. I live in a duplex as well and I already have a cat so another pet would just be too expensive at the moment.

oooh...that's cool..snakes freak me out tho...but i would still want one. Only reason i wont get one..is because its too much of a commitment to me right now. Maybe a small snake or a gecko..yeah that would be sweet..

I kept a Burmese Python for a while, only problem with the big pythons is they are fussy eaters
the will refuse food if it isn't live, and getting a good supply of rats is hard
my local petshop stopped selling me rodents after I cleaned out there rat / gerbil / and babby rabbit supply every few months
they figured out I was feeding a snake and refused to sell me any more

BTW don't keep any other animals when you have a snake over 5ft, they will eat most other pets including birds, fish and any furry animals if they get the chance

What OP said. Snake or any other critter. My T Rex is a bit higher than 5ft, and yesterday another cow went missing at the neighboring farm.

Embarassing, but hey, it's not my fault that a lot of cows are running around loose, or that fences around here a kind of low.

Geckos are nice to, Ive had a couple in my day. My favorite have to be the fat-tailed gecko, they are light brown with dark brown bands, and a fat velour like tail.(they store fat in their tails so if they are well fed they will always have a fat tail. If they have to go without food you can actually see the difference when their tails start to shrink.) Ive also had leopard geckos, also very cool and their tails work the same way, although not as soft to the touch. They are super easy to take car of an maintain, as they can be fed crickets. I would buy vitamin supplement powder and the pet store and shake it around in a bag of crickets for about 10 seconds and wallah a fat happy gecko. On a side note, it you dont like chirping crickets you can also feed them pinkie mice, they are forzen and must be thawed first though.

I'll bet the neighbors stare when you put him on a leash and take him for a walk!
