What can I say trends tend to hit here last...

Here's a shot of the original Sour D mom we flowered out:

We harvested her at 70 days and the smoke was pretty fantastic. We scrapped everything we have grown from seed in the past few years to grow this excusively. Just so tasty and strong! :rasta:

A little background:

We recently relocated to a house in the woods, and a new house means a new grow room! We hastily erected walls, painted them white and covered the floor w/ black poly.

We're running what we call an 'air cooled room'. It's a 4x9 room designed to work with two unsheilded 600's. Each lights a 4x4 area and theres a 1 foot walkway between them. There is a 6" Vortex sucking air out of the ceiling in one corner and a 4" air intake on the floor on the opposite side. Other than the intake/exhaust, it is a sealed room with a stiff breeze going through the intake and across the canopy. Canopy temps have been running 73-77 during the day and 63-65 at night. Light has been between 24-22 inches from the tops. We'll see how we do once we hang the second light!

Here's a shot of the fan setup:

I made a new soil mix this time out of Fafard soilless mix, fish bone meal, alfalfa meal, rock phosphate and pelletized dolomite. I let it cook for a few weeks, duffed it with about 30 % perlite, and then used it to fill a 3'x3' soma-style bed. The bed was planted with 18 ECSD clones which were root-bound in red cups and most were topped once. They were then watered in with plant success myco powder and plain water.

Looked like this:

I'll get my growbook together and update with more pics and feeding/watering schedule later.

peace!!

okay... I've been alternating between neem spray and water every 3-4 days because we had a nasty spider mite infestation in a dark corner of the veg booth.

Shot of the bed at day 5:

We mixed up a tea and fed 5 gallons at 50% 6 days in. It was a tiny bit too strong, but we backed off and did plain water the next few times.
here's the recipe:
5 gal leftover bubblehash water
3tbs seabird guano
6tbs kelp
3tbs molasses
This foamed up really nice around the 48 hour mark at 65 degrees.

We have been rotating the bed 90 degrees every 5-7 days to promote even growth. Also some minor lst and supercropping are going on to keep everybody the same height.

day 10:

On the 10th day we added our classic fungal top dressing and watered it in. It is basically a rotten mixture of oatmeal, coffee grounds, orange and banana peels, and canteloupe rinds. You keep the oatmeal and coffee grounds together, then you dry out the fruit rinds and powder them. You mix these ingredients and cut it with some soil or compost and apply as a topdressing. Keep it wet for a few days and you'll have lots of nice fungi growing on the soil's surface! Not to mention the delicious calcium found in the oats and the nitrogen from the coffee. I don't know whats in the fruit, but it sure smells great! Lol...Our plants have always loved a dank living soil! We found the recipe a while back in the organic fanatic collective I believe.

alright gang, we're almost up to date!

Here are some shots I took two days ago when the plants were 14 days into flower:

They are filling out the space really nicely I think! We did some minor pruning at this time, and misted the fungus on our topdressing down a little. They are slowing down with the stretching, and have set their little buds.

As soon as the exhaust fan kicks on, our whole 6 acres REEKS of roadkill skunk!! Even though we don't have any neighbors, I will be building a DIY carbon filter to fit the exhaust fan in the coming weeks.

And now you are all up to date on the status of our ECSD bed!! :headbange

The purpose of this grow log is to invite suggestions/comments from fellow growers, and to help keep me on my toes! Also I couldn't find a whole lot of tangible grow info about the Sour D so we thought this would also make a nice contribution to the site. oh yeah plus it's FUN.

PEACE!!!

Update: day 21

The ladies are coming along with a nice little budset.

They have finished stretching as far as I can tell, but not before producing dozens of whip like leads reaching for the canopy! I pinched out tons of undergrowth and stringy branches, leaving a nice streamlined canopy.

Canopy temps have been reacing peaks of 86, but they are still resting mostly around 78-80. Definitely going to have to hook up my a/c before too long tho.

They have been sprayed lightly with neem on day 18 for the last time. May have to get some ladybugs or predator wasps if the mites come back, which they usually do! I really dont want to resort to no pest strips, but my experience is that ladybugs can just barely handle the job. Amber found an article about using essential oils of certain plants as nerve agents. I've been thinking about mixing up a batch and soaking a sock in it to put in front of my fan at night. Sounds crazy... I know. But Im kind of a crazy gardener!

I rotated the bed 90 degrees once and did spray them down with plain water a few times. My RH hangs around 35, and they seem to like a morning bath quite well.

The Sour Diesel seems to be a really light feeder for the amount of vegetative growth it can produce. Does it use nutes as efficiently during flowering?? We shall see kiddies!!!

The time is coming for me to think about adding a bit of high P guano or soft rock phosphate to the soil as a flowering food source. They both have a strong burn period of around 45 days , so I like to stop using them that long before harvest. Any feeding suggestions welcomed!

I have a few leaves with lightly burnt tips from over fert still, and a few with a weird deficiency. I will try to post pics soon. I know you guys will be able to help me with that one, and then I will amend my soil mix accordingly for next time!

see you next week!! :joint:

I 2nd that^
SD is my new All time #1!!

I love the bubblehash water for tea waste nothing!!
And the fungal topdressing sounds delicious:)

I'll be taking the seat over here>>>> away from that monster of a fan!
I can see how the whole lot reeks!
Must be like a sour d tornado out of the exshaust!
Takes alot to get that smell under control a carbon filter is a must. IMO

Best of luck to you Doobie and Amber!
It's not hard to see good things in your futures:) JS

Update: day 28

This has been a crazy week for the girls...

temps have been way too high, and I was too dumb to notice it was because my exhaust fan had come partially unhooked and we were recycling hot air.
I awoke yesterday to 97 degree temps, and a completely unhooked exhaust.
I replaced the duct tape with a pipe clamp (duh!) and now canopy temps are back at 77.9. whew!
The hot air spike only lasted about 5 hours so I'm not really worried about it. Most of the week we have been running 83-86. I did pick my first nanners this week tho.

But in the warmer climate, bugs have been breeding like mofos!

Those black spots are bugs you can see with your naked eye! You can actually see them moving the eggs around and stuff... At first I thought We had a case of spider mites, but now Im thinking mites+thrips?? Amber rinsed the leaves with nice cold water, and that seemed to clean the leaf bottoms right off. Regardless, no pest strips are on their way. That and a case of lady bugs should keep them in check until the end of flowering.

Moving on.... heres a shot of the fan leaf I was talking about last week.

I think the brown crispy spots could be from spots of un-cooked amendments in the soil but I dont know. I mixed in some dolomite lime at planting time because I forgot to add it earlier... this is the first thing that comes to mind. Also, the girls are finally starting to look nitrogen deficient.

I mixed up a batch of nutes in rainwater since the girls appear to be somewhat hungry. This is the recipe:

5 gallons rainwater.
48 ml Iguana Juice Bloom
3 tsp water soluble myco w/ humates + kelp
2 tbs micronized rock posphate

And on top of that I topdressed the soil with a big handfull of high P guano and watered it in.

OH! Speaking of TOPDRESSING, here's a cross-section from my fungal topdressing I applied a few weeks ago. I can't get a decent pic, but it's fuzzed up real nice. After a watering she really blooms!!

I guess thats it for now... I'll probably start chiming in with more commentary as things gain momentum. Heres one more shot from the jungle to hold you over.

PEACE!

sorry dudes!!

sorry dudes!!

Computer got fried...

But long story short this operation was a success!
Here's some eye candy... cured 50 days or so.

I still took pictures the whole way through, and kept detailed notes. I'll fill in the rest of the story real soon.

Peace!

Hey Purkle- The top dressing is a bunch of dried fruit peels, coffee and oats. You get it wet, and let it rot. Its teeming with friendly fungi, so I don't have to apply fungal teas during flowering. Also this has lots of N and calcium. I found the recipe here in the organic forum methinks. peace!

whoa Im back

whoa Im back

Update: day 35

I used a hot shot no pest strip for three nights in a row. That mostly took care of the bug problem. I released ladybugs to prevent future problems.

I rotated the bed once, and fed two watering cans of bubblewater plus molasses. I also misted the nugs with clean water to get rid of nasty stuff on the buds like mite poop and dichlorvos(?)

There are dark green spots growing in my fungal topdressing too.

And I added the A/C this week.

Update: day 42

Nothing really happened this week... girls are on autopilot for now.
I drove three 2 gallon watering cans of EJ Bloom + Catalyst into the the soil and rotated the bed once.

Easy peasy!

Noticing a pretty big nitrogen deficiency right about this time...

so
I rotated the bed, and fed a lovely worm casting tea plus molasses.
Next time I'll try to add more long term nitrogen to the soil.

Update: day 56

This week I added a little grow in with the earth juice bloom and catalyst to kind of keep things moving.

And look what else I found creeping around!
