feeding wildlife

this was inspired by a conversation i had earlier elsewhere.

i lived in Alaska for a loooong time...i know how to live with wildlife, and i know what happens when peeps think that they are doing wild animals a favor by feeding them. (wildlife become dead)

my GF also has worked for the forest svc on mt evans colorado, for the nat. park svc. in yosemite and for kenai fjords n. park in alaska...so i hear this stuff from her alot too.

...its one thing that really pisses me off tho, ....(most shit in this world i couldent care less about).... but i'm passionate about wildlife, and when peeps feed wildlife they take the "wild" out of "wildlife"

..you can fukin enjoy wilderness and wildlife w/out injecting your filthy presence(sp?)...u get it.

...ever heard the term "a fed bear is a dead bear"....doesnt just apply to bears (and if you have to ask what it means then Im sorry for you and i'm not gonna explain it)...think about it!

even when peeps indirectly feed wildlife ...like leaving their fukin' trash outside when they live in the mountains....( and then you bitch about the raccoons that are keeping you up at night)..your teaching animals to depend on you...ive gone rounds w/ a guy at work who doesnt get it and he bitches about 'coons and... "how do i kill them/get rid of them?"...also told me stories about hand feeding hotdogs to a "friendly fox".....i told him the fox will soon be dead.

i had a neighbor who used to hand feed elk "apples" off his porch...untill i got in his face in the middle of one said feeding...it fukin pisses me off....same neighbor keeps his windows wide open and hand feeds squirrels IN his living room.

sorry this is getting so long, but like i said it pisses me off.

if you feed wildlife your not doing them any favors!...your accelerating their demise.

im also against feeding birds....yeah i know you all prolly have bird feeders, and my GF's mom taught me about this, and she is an avid bird lover and feeder....(has 10 big tubs of differnt bird seeds and feed)...when they sold their last house she wanted to make sure the new owners would continue to feed the birds, and even checked up on them....(she wasnt happy w/ that visit)

.....but she told us not to feed birds unless we always would be able to...because the same reason...they become dependant on you to feed them...so we dont feed them....i dont want the responsibilty

ok enuff for now, i just wanted to get that off my chest....thanks for listening.

please let wildlife be wild!

I agree, but I'm not going to get in someone's face about it when I'm in their home. My husband and I have had some rather heated debates over the issue, too.

That was very well put, I agree with you 100%. Wild animals are just that, they are wild. They should depend on their own instincts and ability to survive not the carelessness of some person who has in essence invaded their natural ecosystem. I liked what you said about people carelessly feeding animals with their garbage, what ever happened to the principle of leave no trace?

It is amazing that due to one thing......Human contact......That we have such a long endangered species list! Its like the thread about the tribe in brazil, Leave things the way they naturally are and dont introduce them to other things. This is about animals though and I dont agree with feeding wild animals and I think it will eventually evolve into alot of things we are custom to seeing in our wildlife area coming up missing and falling off the face of the earth! we should start naming off animals that have fallen in numbers during our run on this earth and realize just how much wildlife is being tampered with by todays man!

wow i didn't know that if you feed wildlife you could mess it up that much. Learn something new, well not every day but today for sure! I don't feed wildlife but will make sure not to.

I do feed some stray cats in my area because they have no other food or care :(

I think animals are opportunistic just like we are... they aren't stupid. If no humans are around, they will make shift. You're probably thinking about when animals are raised in domesticity and then put in the wild, they sometimes haven't learned the skills they need.

But a bird feeder causing dead birds? I don't think so. That would have to be a mighty stupid bird. There are so many things for birds to eat around the world that they would have to be OCD to fixate on a feeder.

I've watched documentaries where bears roam around looking for things to get into. That's why they get into camps and eat people's food. It's unlikely they're going to suddenly get into a welfare frame of mind after so many years surviving in the wild. Handouts or litter are just another opportunity for them. Don't underestimate animals, they're actually quite intelligent and know more about survival than most of us civilized types.

So, how would you go about not giving them the opportunity.. you can't just seperate humans from wild-life altogether.
And i think bears are just smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity's around them! But! m not a park ranger, so my opinion doesnt count for shit!

there are ways.

if your in the business of growing food (veggies, berries, fruit..etc...)

then there are ways to protect your product.

ever heard of fences.

berry farmer ...haha get it by the bears...and birds.!

self subsistant farmer your gonna have to protect it.

I understand what you are saying, and it's a shame that nature is being ruined by our increasing population. One day there could be no land for wild life to roam...

A fence? maybe a gigantic wall, haha
I usually kill of any pests, it's sad but if they are a nu sense, then it has to be done!

Same thing w/ farmers killing coyotes
skinning them, and putting their carcass on the fence..

so, berry farmers do that to bears right?
don't see why they are soooo much better then coyotes

shit i eat bear....its not the point, and bears wont go near patches protected.

ever heard of dogs?

my dogs will keep all animals away...canines, bears, coyotes, fox, wolf., human...anything!...i cant think of an animal that would go near my property thru my dogs ....and i dont have to kill anything.

NOKUY, I didn't see anyone calling you names or flaming on your rantings,
so why the hell are you abusing people with opinions in a thread you opened?

Do you despise the highway dept for salting the roadways which then draw
deer to the roads edge for a salt fix? We share the land with the wildlife, it
is now a symbiosis that defies any single common law or rule as EVERY
circumstance is different. Survival of the fittest will ALWAYS apply, some
day man will be LONG GONE & animals will rule the earth once more.

Dr. 420 says: Do two tokes and love your fellow stoners.......

I never feed large animals (unless they're domestic....), but I fill the bird feeders every once in a while.

Not all the time, but maybe once a week.

As man intrudes into the domain of wild animals, too much contact is inevitable. It can be fatal to both, as witnessed by the deaths of people in Cali who built houses in areas that cougars inhabit. Some people take the easy way out and live off the welfare system. Some animals do the same and live off the trash of humans. We are not doing the people on welfare any favors,as most have not learned to survive without it. Same goes for the animals.

I dont feed nothing, it encourages them to come back for more, leave them alone or shoot em. I popped 7 groundhogs in one evening digging under the fence to my garden.
