How should I vent this setup? And max wattage per 4x4?

I'm going to have a 4x4 grow tent, a 6 inch vortex pulling through a scrubber outside, and a Dayton 465 sucking air through my light.

The probem is that ive got a shitty hood for the 1k, its an xtrasun ballast with a "valuebrite" hood, which does not let you connect ducting to both sides because the power cord is wired on one side. SO, will the air I'm pulling through the light smell, or will the vortex take care of the smell?

Should I buy a new hood/is there a way around this somehow? I'm thinking maybe I should just use the vortex to pull through the light and push through the scrubber outside the tent (and maybe use the Dayton as an intake,) but ive heard that's less efficient, and I'm loathe to buy another hood because I'm fucking broke and want $ to spend on tweaking my hydro setup.

My 2nd question/thought is about how much light I can cram into that 4x4. I read an article in high times about high yields in small spaces that has me considering putting up 2-600 watt lights in my dr120 4x4 instead of the 1k I have. Can the dr120 even support all that weight? That would be 75W/sq ft which would be sick, and if I ran it at night it should be plenty cool with my vortex and Dayton. I also thought about 1600 watts but thought it would be absurdly overkill.

Thoughts?

The smell will get sucked out of the hood.

ALthought it isnt the most efficient. It will get rid of the smell issue.

Either buy new hood or two carbon filters.

use the method you describe.
or

You can use a y to duct the hood and exhuast to the same carbon filter.

Recommended the cfm is matched so you ash the carbon filter too fast.

you did not mention if you are using c02? (75watts sq ft is ideal with c02 enrichment)

1000 watts will work fine with 4x4.

Ideal size is 3'x4' for 1000 watts but you are close enough.

Another factor is cooling the 4x4 . You may run into issues cooling more than 1000 watts (all depend on your ambient temps)

Your probably better of ($$ wise) using your 1000 and getting the ducting worked out.

I would hook up the 1000 and see how your temps are.

Then you can decide to add the additional wattage.

Personally, I would go with c02 before the additional wattage. (As far as next investment)

I personally, Have done quite well with 1000 watts over 4x4.

hope that helps

Cool thanks for the suggestions, I actually realized that I CAN vent through both sides of this hood just fine, there is a slot you can stick the cord in.

I'm running it right now and it's at 72 degrees venting from the carbon filter through the light out a window. And that's without the intake I'm going to setup...I think I'm pretty set! :D

I also am planning a 4x4 hydro hut grow with a 1000 watt lamp shining down over the girls. (AIR COOLED) I was wondering if I could get away with one fan doing the lamp cooling and room exhaust/ smell at the same time. The fan will be in the 500 cfm range. My main concern is the noise that is why I would like to do it all wit one fan or will my temps be too high?

I'm doing that right now with a 449 cfm 6 inch vortex. It all depends on your climate though. If you cycle at night and can leave the windows open (assuming you're not living in the desert,) it should be cool enough.

Ok. Things should be fine then Thanks for the input. Phattybudz -

How is your system in regards to noise levels? Is it comfortable for living with a roommate?

well, doing soil it's not that noisy but noticeable outside my door. As long as they know what you're up to you'll be perfectly fine... I sleep next to mine even with hydro.
