The naming strains debate (Warning-may be long winded)

What I hate is when people make hybrids of clone onlys and try to pass them off as IBL's under the same name as the clone only.

Fact: You can not make a IBL if you have to outcross it any step along the way.

spot on FMBob... see it everywhere and its only gonna keep happening as peeps realise the buckets of $$$ they can make selling 'clone only' strains in seed form label it this that...

Greetings

Jon

You pose an interesting query.

A point to consider:

You're not naming (or renaming) a strain...you're indentifying/distinguishing a particular specimen (cut). If the same decorum that scientific convention employs is applied, then one can distinguish a particular specimen in anyway that one sees fit; given that the label remains consistent and that it is not easily confused or a duplicate of another label already established.

This statement is factually inaccurate. If you desire further clarification, I would request you be civil and deliberate in your response.

I see where you're coming from.

A point to consider: any designate after the formal name has bearing and relevance, and therefore identifies or signifies a difference.

As illustration: Sour Diesel is (of course) not the same as Sour Diesel BX-1 and by extension, Sour Diesel IBL. The designates are modifiers.

So coupling the specifying label with the nomenclatic designate is not only useful in tracking genetic progression, it is also correct.

Now (according to convention), if selection was made away from the specifying label i.e. ‘the IBL’ showed little or none of the traits that identify the “clone-only” specimen, then a label change (including or representing the additional genetic material) should be made.

Sincerely,
Charles.

I think the dog ref. made earlier was spot on.

If you look at it like dogs, everybody names their pet. the name never really ever has anything to do with the breed of the dog.

When you start to sell dogs, you are almost always going to be asked for the breed.

It should be the same with bud.

I can care less that you call the strain "umpa-lumpa" or whatever, but if I am going to be buying this strain from you, id like to know the heritage of it.

Someone needs to make a repository that people can upload their pics of strain X and then add its crosses, name etc. Would be cool to try and trace them all around.

Of course the data couldn't be assumed to be legit, but if the people uploading to it are responsible, it could be something neat to look at.

just like chem dawg , just a mut. name the mut anything you wan't, if its good smoke the name will stick. speaking of names why did you pick a name already in use?

Wasn't trying to step on your toes dude but if you would have spelled it correctly they wouldn't have let me have this handle. I didn't search the 39,000+ member list to see if it was in use. My appoligies.

A ped database for pot would be sweet.

I think that unstabilzed crosses should be called this x that. Until you have a few generations under your belt how can it be your creation. Naming a strain should be left to those that have put in the work and selection. If you haven't selected for your own desired traits and stabilized it, it's just a mutt. JMHO

Where did I say it was my creation?

I see people naming mutts all the time. They don't name the breed, but they name the dog. Catch the analogy?

Not bashing anyone, it's JMHO. I think most people look at weed names differently than pet names. Do you know what the make up of a dog is if he's named Spot? I've never given my plants pet names. Thats just me. To each their own.

I personally prefer to know it's origins rather than what some goob decides to call it. Around here the same cut has 4 different names and to the less knowledgeable they think it's different strains.........which is an awefull lot of confusion. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck..............why call it a dog?

Give an example of something other then cannabis where there was only a female from a population that was made into an IBL.....You need both sexes from the same population to start an IBL.

Zea sp. (Corn).

Got a link...?

And how about something that is predominantly dioecious.

Kush and Sour Diesel are said to be the same exact thing. GDP, Urkel, Grape Ape, etc, etc, are ALL just referred to as Grapes by the black youth of Northern California.

Also not to be rude, the "kush" I grow has a history that comes from mountain plants. Where is your sour diesel coming from? I'm pretty sure its a cross of something, or has a traceable history ( I don't follow strains well but i sure know what a "kush" is) regardless I doubt its the same thing. Not even all real kushes are the same thing.

Also As a black grower, i personally feel as if the last quoted paragrah makes you look like a pretty big jerk. Thats the only reason I bothered to respond. I'm not making any type of point.

In an ideal Cannabis world(I live there,Join me)we would all name favourite plants whatever we like. Either locally or Internationally, for sale or free distribution...(or do you call your Cheese cut Sk#1? Bcos I don't even if the genetics are from exact same mum and dad)..but would also document all genetic history as best we can without Bullshit(yes, you Arjan)for future holder's of the Germplasm. With any 'pet' names or coding then becoming what they should be...
Which is a useful reference to a phenotype within the same genetic source to aid us in stabilisation projects and BX's.
If you know what the genetics are, then a few names don't hurt...do they?
People will allways try to steal others work(try working in the Music Bizniz) but Snakes in the grass always become obvious in the end so let them lie and cheat and we'll all concentrate on responsible forward looking use of our favourite plant's many wonderful attribute's.....Now Who Want's to name my F23's of
SuperBigSilverHolyCheeseyPoisonBerryMistSkunk x LAPurpleSourOGBubbaGumDeiselKushWreck47LowFlyer..That I stole from the Devil himself....How about 'CONFUSION'...or 'LONGWINDED'...lol.
