6000 BTU enough to cool 2000 watts?

Hey guys,

I'll be running 2 1000 W HPS systems in one of those 4 feet x 8 feet Homebox units. With 30 degree temps all summer and an enclosed system, I know that ventilation and cooling are going to be absolutely critical. If I'm drawing 6000 BTUs of cold air into the room through a window-installed AC and then using Vortex fans to pull air through the Homebox, do you think temps will still be a problem? I know the general rule of thumb is 4000 BTU per 1000 W, but this poor uni student isn't about to buy a second air conditioner. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Maybe if it's hooked up to the box if its just cooling the room and then the box probably not... 30c? How big is the room the homebox is in?

The room is maybe 10 feet by 12. I could definitely rig insulated ventilation tubing directly to the AC's output but I'm curious about whether or not 6000 BTUs is enough to get the job done even with such a set-up. I'll tell you something, there are times that I wish I lived up in the Yukon where cooling = opening a window.

It'll be working hard...4000 btu per 1000w of light is needed for non air cooled lights.

i have 2 1ks in a homebox xxl. its more like 4.5 x 9. i think.

i ditched the 6000 btu unit for a 12000. now i can control the heat.

remember that other factors determine how much a/c you will need. my homebox is in a garage-like area. the tempsare kinda warm naturally in the spring and summer. i have a hard time keeping the heat in check still. i vent my hood with a blower and take many measure to battle the heat. if i were you, either drop a lamp, or get a bigger A/C. the extra cash in the beginning will save you in the long run.

Its always better to go on the bigger side especially since it seems theres allready record heat it would suck to have a two week heatwave and yer a/c wont cut it.

Multiply 3.4btu times total wattage of all lights and devices in the room for a Base Number. Then you will have to ADD for outside heat infiltration in order to correctly size your AC Unit.

You're already in excess of the ability of the 6K to handle the situation during high summer temperatures. Sorry about the bad new, it's all mathematical.

Although you guys managed to deflate my hopes for a bigger grow, I appreciate the reality check. I'll probably go with 2 600s just to be on the safe side. I'll tell you, temperature is the #1 factor that limits my grows, both indoors and out. Nutes, pH, light, nor any other factor even comes close to being such a bitch. -40 C in the winter and 35 C in the summer, gotta love Canada!

Hey buddy...if your low on cash and need a bigger unit just keep an eye on craigslist for an 8k, 10k or even 12k btu AC. You can find em CMEMORY but you have to check CL everyday and stay on top of it. Also, have a look at some of the AC box threads on here...

These boxes are perfect for people who don't have the option of putting their unit in a window or through the wall.
*Another plus is that the most smaller units (5k to 15k btu) run on standard 120v.*

hell no. stick that thing out the window. all the extra costs of fans and boxing materials/time. just get a 12k portable.. there like 500. or get one used. craigslist is great.
