I thought you might want to see some root shots from my recent Strawberry Haze grow in modified waterfarms under 1250 watts in a 4x5x8 closet. Some of the plants got almost 7 feet tall.

These were taken 4 days after the plants were completely chopped, but I left the water pumps running so I could take some pictures. They are a bit more brown but still absolutely healthy.

Got my first look at Root Porn and DWC through the NGB cab and I knew I had to have some of my very own. I forgot to measure anything but, the tub below it is 18 gallons and 15 inches tall. Not only did I need to perform a heater-ectomy but airstone surgery as well. The root ball swallowed everything in its path

This was takin like 3 weeks before 12/12. I checked 'em like 2 weeks ago, and they look f-ing sweet. I'm currently in week 4 of flower, and cant really check em till I chop. I'm so stoked, this being my first grow and all.

great looking roots, are there any worries with the an airstone getting wrapped up in all those roots? Do the roots cause the airstones to put out less?

Great question. My airstones we completely devoured by the roots. You could not see the airstone at all on several only the tubing going in.

I would assume that they were still pumping out lots of air as the roots looked perfect. (I also recirculate - so this could be a factor as well.

Anyone care to chime in on this?

My experience also - rootball in 11 litre tub ate 2x6"airstones, and heater.

I don't know if they put out less but, they seem to put out enough. My root ball swallowed everything it could get to. I had to cut the root ball open to find the airstones. Not because I wanted the stones but, until I did, I couldn't reclaim the tubing.

Heres an inexpensive idea that works well in DWC, homemade "net-pots"!!!
I use 4" round plastic pots and cut the bottoms off leaving a cross in the bottom. This leaves plenty of room for your roots to grow into the rez tank and a support system to hold lava rocks as plant stabilizers The 4" round plastic pots cost about 10cents each as opposed to $2.99 each per net-pot!

I germ in a washcloth and transplant into peat-pellets, they go right into the homemade net-pots without any stress!!!!

I try to keep costs down where ever possible, I'd rather spend it on genetics!!!

Pretty sure the brown on the last pic is discoloration from the hydroton...I put some SM-90 in just in case.

Your roots won't stay white forever no matter what you do. A certain amount of staining is inevitable. I only say this to keep you from panicking at every hint of color and end up with a tank full of SM90. I understand the concern. Imagine my horror when I went to sneak a peek at my girl's pearly whites and saw this...



It was just sediment from old nutes. Rinsed right off and with new nutes, she did OK.
