Wiring a PC case fan?

Anyone have the old how to? I can't remember and its been awhile...
If i remember correctly you can use any sort of DC power adapter, like an old cell phone charger??

Wish i knew more about electricity.... that is the one thing i have no farking clue on.

EDIT: my fan says on it .23A, and on the box it says current: .11A

how much mA does that equal, anyone?

dude firstly look at the fan, it should have some sort of specs written on it, probably says x mA and something vdc, well first find a dc adapter that is close, too low, and the fan wont really spin. too high risks fire and injury from flying fan parts.

Strip the wires there are two from the pc fan and two from the charger. Connect them to each other. You cannot go backwards, the fan will just spin the other way if you do, no big deal. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOU PLACE DOWN, USE COMMON SENSE AND SAFETY AT ALL TIMES, AND ELECTRICAL TAPE.

Anyways have fun

I know how to splice the wires...I've done this before like 5 years ago now, however my memory is about as good as um an ant?

It doesn't have a mA anywhere on it, it just says DC12V and .23A , I am guessing the .23 is the mA in a different form?

although on the package of the fan it says "current: .11A"

EDIT: I searched and found a pretty detailed explaination, but it didnt say anything about mA versus A

mA just means miliamps or 1 A x10-3
so If I am reading your post right, your charger says .23 amps? and the fan says .11 a?

a bit too high for the fragile parts of a fan, but it should work, just keep an eye on it, make sure the wires are not getting too hot

If the charger is around 12 Volts it should work fine. It will run up to 12V, but only push out the small current that the fan is asking for.

I had an 18V laptop charger that was too much for a single PC fan, so I wired two fans in series, giving each about 9V. They spin a bit slower, but at least keep a little air moving around.

NO, the FAN ITSELF says .23A on the back of it, along with 12V, HOWEVER on the PACKAGE OF THE FAN, it says "Current: .11A"... thats what didnt make sense to me...

The DC CHARGER's i have hanging around here are both 7.5V :( 700mA, and 1400mA... I wanted to know if either one of those would work safely.

The safety is the key part, i dont care if the fans only spinning at 50% or whatever... as long as its moving some air out the top of the cab :)

oh -- a 7.5 Volt charger won't fully power a 12V fan, although it would probably spin it slowly and quietly. I don't think safety is too much of a concern, since we're only talking about a few watts of power. Much safer to play with this stuff than the high voltage high current lights. Just feel the fan motor after it's run for a while to see how hot it is.
