Hempy Bucket

I have read as much as I can find, and have searched as far as I could all over the net. But can anyone give me a basic "how it works" on the hempy bucket? How do the roots not rot without air? I understand the whole concept, except for that one factor.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Hey haps, would you be able to throw me towards a page somewhere that might shed that little bit of light on me so that I see the rest of the puzzle?

hey phil,
it is not complicated at all
2 gallon bucket, small hole in side of bucket about 2 inches up from bottom for drainage, filled with peralite..water with your favorite Hydro nutrient and thats it...
no bubbles needed, it is just that simple.

In my head I have the system down pat.. aside from the thought of no root rot. I know that perlite provides aeration. But enough to prevent rot? It doesn't seem possible. Maybe it is just me that is over thinking everything but who knows.

nice plants btw Scorpion!

There are threads here, maybe check freedom buckets. That system calls for a high powered blower and serious air plumbing, keep reading.

Keep in mind that as long as you have decent oxygen levels, root rot shouldn't be an issue. Plants sit in giant rockwool cubes all the time and don't rot. PUre perlite should be no problem. I use straight perlite in order to root cuttings all the time. I let my cuttings sit in perlite with an inch or 2 of water. Root rot rarely happens to me unless I have really cold temps which tends to perpetuate the effect.

Hey Phli, I over thought the hempy thing at first as well, now I'll never use anything else.

The small reservoir that is created below the hole in your hempy, does not remain stagnant for any length of time that would create rot.

The perlite is constantly wicking your water/nute solution, just as the roots are also wicking what they need.

I do my hempys in 2-liter bottles for my clones. It took me about a month of checking the bottoms each day before I realized that what I watered with one day, was gone by the next.

With larger containers you may can go 2 days or more between refills, but I like seeing and watering my babes each day.

It really is truly simple and VERY effective at growing what we love, just jump in and try one and I think you'll see the joys of hempy.

Thanks ogh, for some reason that very simple answer solved my headache around the system!? Over thinking is good sometimes, but not when it comes to simple things. I'm in the process of setting everything up right now, grabbing the beans and the germing will be started this weekend.
Due to space restrictions, I'm going 12/12 from seed, how big should my buckets be? do you think 2 liter bottles will suffice?

thanks again to everyone for helping me out.

I would think if you aren't doing 100% sativas, then 2-liters will be great.

If I get some time soon I'll snap a few pics of my little set-up. Just this morning transferred my first Satori and Northern Light clones into little mini-hempy 10oz. cups. I rooted in small rockwool starters, and figure I'll let the roots fill in this small cup for a couple weeks and then transfer to 2-liters for flowering.

I did over feed for a while my current ladys, my first hempys, as I was thinking and treating them like hydro and thought they needed a nutrient solution at all times. Then I learned to water, water, water, feed, water, water, water, feed....and alls been well since then.

Sorry OGH, you've now become the expert of this thread and opened yourself up to some newby mauling.

Are you using soil for the top portion or are you fully hydro and have some other medium? Ever had roots block the drain hole?

Haha, no expert here, learning as I go, but willing to share as I wouldn't have learned what I have without others sharing.

My current batch of 7 NL clones in 2-Liter hempys were transferred from 16oz. cups with soil about 2 weeks into flowering. Not by design, it was that I simply got too intrigued by the hempy style not to try. So, those do have soil still around the original rootball.

The rest of the medium is 100% perlite in the bottles. Locally I can only find the MG perlite, which does have nutes, but not very strong nutes. So I rinse it very well. I won't know if this perlite caused my early nute burns, or if I overfed with my Foxfarms, until the current clones (in tiny cups) start growing into flowering mode. If I go ultra lite feeding on this batch and don't have burn issues, then I'll assume the MG perlite was not to blame.

This new batch of 8 clones (4 Satori, 4 Northern Lights) is the first set I've rooted in rockwool, and will use 100% perlite again as I try to dial in the whole hempy thing myself.

Never had roots block the drain. I don't pur screen over the drain either...well, I did one with screen and 6 without. I hand water each day and check for proper drainage...so far, so good.

Hope to get pics up later -Peace - OGH

OGH, looks very nice even with the nute burn! We all learn by trial and error obviously because I'm sure your growing skills are growing day by day.
My plan is a sog mini-cab style....so I'm hoping that a 1 gallon or 1.5 gallon bucket will do me just fine...?? I'm liking your cloning try alot tho! What kind of nutes are you using?
