JOHN Farnham's anthem You're the Voice has been voted Australia's best rock song in an online poll of Herald Sun readers.

It captured 28 per cent of votes, coming in ahead of Cold Chisel's Khe Sanh (22 per cent) and AC/DC's Jail Break (11 per cent).

Other songs to feature prominently were Hunters and Collectors' Throw Your Arms Around Me, Daddy Cool's Eagle Rock and Friday on My Mind by the Easybeats.

Music commentator Glenn A. Baker said he was surprised that You're the Voice grabbed the No. 1 position, given that Friday on My Mind was voted the best Australian song of all time in a poll of industry experts three years ago.

"But it just goes to show you what the people want to hear differs quite vastly from what the industry thinks," Baker said.

"It's a song that really is an anthem about empowering yourself and I think people really relate to that.

"I know John Farnham went through thousands of songs before he chose You're the Voice as a single."

The song was written primarily by Keith Reid, of 1960s English band Procul Harum, and Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann.

You're The Voice?!?!?...life affirming horse shit.

But I wonder if this is a true representation of the nations taste or an insight into the type of people that read the Herald Sun.

The real answer is: who are The Dirty Three :rasta:

"Your the voice". One of the most annoying songs ever.

How about:
(Im) Stranded- the saints
Wide open road- the Triffids
anything by Nick Cave, cruel sea, hunters?, Midnight oil, radio birdman, and um yeah o.k. the dirty three.

"You're the voice" by John Farnem huh? Well I'm stunned it was ANYTHING by that crooning fucking fool.

You know that clown is so egotistical, he told a story on a tv interview I watched one day. he spoke of trying to escape his fame, and enjoy some anonimity, so he went fishing...to Lake's Entrance, for bream. He went on to say he couldn't escape even there, because within hours there were people everywhere clamering to find him !!
Lake's Entrance, or any bream spot in season is like a major city street! They were there fishing, you fucking moron I wanted to shout But he was totally convinced the word was out, and they were all there looking for him, ruining his evening out fishing.

Lake's Entrance would have to be at least as popular as Jumpinpin for bream, and on a decent tide night there, you can have 200 boats tied up in a row.

He's got real problems.

TEST - Walk into any pub in Australia, shout out "John Farnham's 'Youre The Voice' is the best pub rock anthem", and see if you can last more than 25 seconds

CONCLUSION - _HELL NO_ is any Johnny Farnham song a pub rock anthem, let alone a #1.

Yesterday I got my copy of the Dirty Three DVD. It's truly awesome. 2 discs and has a live set from a Tokyo concert. The doco is good also, goes into the local rock scene in Melbourne in the early nineties.

I could only find it through JB's online store. If you like the Dirty Three then you must buy! Had to get it on special order...took nearly two weeks to arrive but it was worth it.

The Dirty Three (2 Dvd)

The Dirty Three are the rough and ready jewels in the crown of Australian rock and roll history. Born from the need to put food on the table and spawned from the intensely collaborative local Australian music scene in the 80s and early 90's, the Dirty Three pioneered the instrumental rock and roll music scene in Australia with their cathartic, sometimes violent and always spellbinding brand of music. Within a few short years, they achieved local and international success and left Australian shores to take their Music to the world. To this day the band continues to tour the world and serve the music that they see as a real, living and breathing thing that chooses the Dirty Three's custodianship.
Nick Cave, Steve Albini, Ed Kuepper, Bobby Gillespie, Mick Harvey, Catpower, Alexandre Pierrepont, Noah Taylor, Will Oldham and many more jump at the chance to tell their personal Dirty Three stories.

Greatest Australian rock song...Sue's Last Ride. Warren, Mick and Jim, each one of these guys is an artist in themselves. Sounds like drivel but it's like they are not playing the music...more like they are being channeled by some force.

What annoys me...that they are recognised more in US and Europe than in Oz. Even those little twerps at JJJ rarely touch their stuff. If it doesn't go under 3 minutes and no singing then for some reason they can't play it...BULLSHIT.

thought "Shivers" from The Boys Next Door (N. Cave) would grab a spot there too...

Warren Ellis and the band didn't get any votes or what?
