Wargames was the movie that introduced me (and probably most other people reading this thread) to the fascinating and REAL military concept of M.A.D. - Mutual Assured Destruction. This first came about at during the Cold War so think US vs USSR for a moment. Both the US and Russia have submarines armed with nuclear missiles, so if one country attempts to destroy the other then the submarines (which wouldn't have been destroyed seeing as they're far away at sea) can launch their nuclear missiles in retaliation to wipe out the other country.

In other words it's a deadlock - if either party attempts to obliterate the other party they in turn will be obliterated. No party can afford to even attempt an attack on the other because they know they will be equally wiped out in return. Mutual assured destruction.

It's like nuclear chess ...
