being broke when your 18 isnt near as bad as being broke when your 30.. go get a pizza delivery job in the evening or something, a career is more important than a job

What kind of job would you do in a oilfield? So when you were 18 they were paying you 80k from the start or did you have to work up to 80k? Okwildfire please inform me because I'm pretty interested! And do you think there would be less oilfield jobs now or cut backs because of some things?

ahhh hey there brother! the patch is on fire right now! everyone is hiring..and with that north dakota find...it's only going to get wilder..you start out making bank...and if ya work on a drilling rig..hell ya only work 6 month's outta the year...so ya pretty much get a vacation every other week...and the pay is only going higher! if ya went to say CO. WY. MT. SD. ND. UT...they start worm's out at about 26-27 bux an hour..and any thing over forty hour's is overtime...sky's the limit baby...oh yeah..some company's pay for school...they want you to have a degree..so you can go all the way to the top..if that's the route ya wanna take...oh yeah...on a rig..you will work 12 hr. on, and 12 off...either 7 day's on..and 7 off...or 14 on and 14 off....hope that helps! if ya wanna ask about any thing..im all ear's.

I bet if you tell UPS about your situation, they'd be willing to give you another chance in a couple of years. If you explain to them that you'd like to work for them in the long term, but you need full time work right now to pay your bills, they'll understand.

bro, clearly you have not read the books i have listed. none of them are about getting "rich"....

if you only knew... most millionaires dont drive escalades.... maybe you should take the time to do research before you start coming up with your soft ass " never seein your kids" bullshit, and for the record, most millionaires drive economical, used vehicles... If you want to know the exact makes and models most millionaires cruise in, take a look at "the millionaire mind." Yes, you DO have to actually read more then the cover of the book.

most successful people in fact DO contribute alot to society, and have the GREATEST understanding of EVERYTHING that is good, true, and beautiful.

and also...

bro, in response to this line... dude...

the books you listed suck for this topic... they were good when they were first published.. and much was learned from them... but will they make you money? no

I would say success has nothing to do with money, so why would someone read the books i suggested to get rich? You're right, the classical texts are not for careers, since a career is a 21st century invention. And you see, the classical texts are still as great as they were in 350 BC, because the classical writings address questions that are eternal and unchanging in time. So it wouldn't make sense to say that classical texts have nothing to do with life. Unless you believe human life has essentially become something different than it was 2000 years ago. In which case, you believe we are different creatures than the humans that were alive 2000+ years ago. Classical doesn't mean old, it means the subject of study pertains to the eternal and unchanging (the good, true, beautiful). This means the good, true, and beautiful have not changed since the dawn of man. So, there are classicist writers today in philosophy, because they address questions about human nature and life that never change. So, the whole point of reading classical texts is to understand those questions which never change.

"Rich Dad, Poor Dad" advocates financial independence through investing, real estate, owning businesses, and the use of finance protection tactics. I also got some pop-ups for "how to be a rich-dad" training during my internet search. I haven't read the book, but it sounds like it talks about how to make money.

And in regards to your research, it is evident that you have failed to examine the books I have listed.

Rockin, if you are going to read a book, read something by Dave Ramsey. First thing he will do is suggest you ditch the car, and then probably the cell phone. You don't need it, and there is no argument you can make that would justify having it.
The get rich books are for shit, and full of plenty of it. Save your money and don't even think about those. The authors got rich by selling to us, bottom line.

I assume you live at home, and moving anywhere means rent, among a whole host of other bills. I'd stay at home and work at UPS. You are not going to make $30hr anywhere in the short time you can at UPS, without a degree that is. And UPS also has great programs for students, and will pay for it too.

Crab boats are for those who have no other options, You have plenty of good options. Unless of course you feel you have little to live for. That is a very bad idea from what I am reading about you, IMHO.

I can speak from a lifetime of experience, and having raised 4. Our last one is exactly your age and in the same conundrum. We were all in the same boat at your age, just different circumstances. 18 is a very hard age to deal with for everyone.

I went into the military and sorted it out, but it was peace time, so that may not be your thing. But it all boils down to sorting it out, and getting your priorities straight.
And I know you don't think or feel it right now, but NONE of us have the mental capacity to make the very best decisions when we are 18...and that is a proven fact.
That is mainly why drinking age is 21 in most places. Sorry, you can't argue that one either, even though we would ALL have argued it at 18, myself included. It's just one of those things that you will understand when you are older.

Sounds like you are a bright kid, and I wish the very best for you. Just don't make stupid decisions that you are going to regret.
And one more thing...I stress this to my kids, including the last one left at home...time is in a different frame for you than it is for me. 4 years will fly by like the blink of an eye when you are over 30...and at your age it seems like a long time. Trust me on this one.

Good luck!

Too true...
I'm mid-twenties, and 2007 was a fucking blur it moved so quickly.

I will stop "preaching" on this thread. I am sorry if my advice was of no use. hoosierdaddy has a point, avoid costs and save money and study. Live at home and work as little as possible, to get by, and for a few extra needs than those basic to man. Avoid car insurance, rent, bills (credit card, cell phone, etc.) Otherwise, one becomes a slave to the system of capitalism, having to work off credit by holding jobs, etc.

I know it is hard to break out of capitalism. I have a car, a job, the whole fuckin' deal. but I don't like it, in fact I curse it everyday.

I'm over twice that - shoot, I close my eyes and it's 2 months later...

lol

My dad told me that years ago - older ya get, the faster the time goes.

But no matter how old you live to, your first 20 years will seem the longest...

Whats up guys, been awhile since ive been on the forums. Simply been too busy getting on my feet. I turned 18 about 8 months ago and priorities have changed ALOT (i still blaze though ;] ) .

So i have a dilemma. Ive been working as a part time package handler for ups almost 2 years (since ive turned 17). I only get 4-5 hours a day at $10.50 an hour which comes out to $150-170 a week depending on union dues/taxes etc..

Well the only reason im sticking with ups is because i know when i turn 21, old enouph to become a full time driver, ill be set for life. Its possibly one of the best jobs for a person without a college education.

The problem: i can barely pay my insurance and car payment and i never have money. i have a second job but im so drained and tired from the early morning sweat shop (UPS) that im miserable at the second job.

I have an interview at Frito-lay for a warehouse position tomorrow that pays 16.81 hourly and minimum of 8 hours a day. now that would be living NICE.

BUT! i know i wont be nearly as wealthy in the long run with frito lay.

People tell me i need to live it up now, but i simply cant when all my money goes to cell phone bills, car payment, car insurance. And i feel if i stay at ups, thinking of the long run, ill be wasting away some of the best year of my life.

What would you guys do???? ANY input would be appreciated! thanks :)

Great things come in time.. immediate gratification is a wonderful poison.

some things should be waited out.. and at yer age, its a great time to start thinking about yer future! because yer future will be here before you know it!

Hey okwildfire,

Do you have any suggestions on how to get more info about working on a rig? More specifically, how do you find the jobs?
