i usually catch garfish each summer, great little fish to catch and not a bad feed either, but there are a lot of different types of garfish and im not familiar with alligator gar (im in Australia) so maybe my advice wont be of much use. I catch these sorts:

For those i find a slow retrieve of the float after casting works well, often they race each other to the bait. And dont forget BERLEY which garfish go bananas for - tuna oil and bread work perfectly.

For the rig i use a small float followed by 1 to 2 feet of tracer line then a berley cage, more tracer and then a small-medium suicide hook on the end. You'd be best to get local advice as to what bait to use.

btw garfish generally get a bit timid if the water is choppy, i usually have better luck on the calmer days

good luck

bow fishing for Gar is quite fun considering they have to come to the surface for air. Keep in mind the big ones are quite old. Gar get to a "Top of the food chain" size pretty quick.

The alligator gar is the largest species of gar and is the largest exclusively freshwater fish in North America. It can be as long as eight to twelve feet and often weighs at least 100 pounds at maturity. The current world record alligator gar weighed 279 pounds and was caught in the Rio Grande River in 1951. Even larger alligator gars — over 300 pounds — have been caught by trotliners.

I used to catch them but usually when fishing for something else. Bait stealing bastards, lol...You can use cut bait-shad, herring, or other type of fish, most any type will do. Fish on the bottom or float it a foot or 2 under a cork. Have had them attack artifical lures too, but mainly when they are schooling in the area.

never forget one night in army in kansas-frying on acid(ya i know) fishing in a creek by a HUGE forest of wild hemp(no, wasnt just trippin) when we decided to do a little fishing-well, being from alaska, not knowing what a gar was, you can imagine what my mind went thru under those circumstances when i pulled a two foot allig. gar out of the creek. my mind refuses to get over that trauma!!!!thought i had caught satan in fish form.
