Substitute for Blood meal + Bone meal?

Corn gluten will stop your seeds from germinating. Make sure you have plants a few weeks old.
Meals and blood will attract animals. Cottonseed meal could be used for nitrogen. I don't think kelp will attract animals as bad as bone meal. But you still need a phosphorous source. Soft rock phosphate ma work. Jamaican bat guano mixed into the soil may be another option.
Are any of those prospects good for you?
Get back to us and we'll work on it.

Just for the record....My girlfriend's dog got very interested in my tote that had my bat guanos in it. There was no blood or bone meal in it. I had to put the tote out of her(the dog's) reach :sasmokin:

For Nitrogen use cottonseed meal to cover you long-term and alfalfa mealto provide N quickly.

For Phosphorus... if you are afraid to use high-P bat guano (I've never had a problem myself), then buy some micronized soft rock phosphate from an online vendor. Greensand is a great addition, available over the loooong-term.

Keep in mind too that cow/horse/pig/sheep manures all contain a decent amount of N, P and K... usually something like 7-3-5 or so. A good place to start, plus creates a lot of great humus in the soil.

Just so you know I've had problems using guanos also. It's like an armadillo magnet. You'll come to your plot and see you plants dug up laying on their sides. I've now resorted to Mole-out granules which is also effective against armadillos

feel lucky, they love roots and grubs and I can't count the times I've had them slap dig my plants up to get at the roots. Really any rich soil attracts them as it attracts grubs and being organic......yeah it's rich

Flax seed meal - 6-3-2
Is this fast or slow release?

Which kind of meals have you found to attract animals?

Another slow release: feather meal 15.3/0/0.

Anyone know if canola meal 6.25/1/1.22 is fast or slow release?

Flax seed meal is a very fast release amendment. Probably because of how fine the meal is after the oil is pressed out of it. If you took a handful of it and blew on it the stuff scatters like dust.

Do not attempt to use flax seed oil. These oils are used in some paint formulas to help the drying process. I can't even imagine what it would do to the roots of a plant. Not to mention what the effect might be on the leaves & branches.

Because of the demand of flax seed meal as animal feed, the cost of this amendment is a bit high, IMHO. It runs about $1.00 per lb. in a 50 lb. sack. It is an effective soil amendment which adds any number of micro nutrients and definitely helps feed the micro herd.

Canola meal also breaks down quickly. It runs about $.60 per lb. when buying it in 50 lb. sacks at our local farm store. Pretty popular item and it's organic. Comes out of Canada and/or Western Washington.

another good way to keep deer away is just go out to your patch, down a 6 pack and pee around every plant. its cheaper than buying preaditor urine and is effictive from what ive read.
ps. rain will wash it off so keep that in mind.
hope this helps.

OK so i used bone + blood meal for one plot, and for my second plot going to use:

Mixed in with my mix LC's Mix #1 including Peat moss, EWC, Perlite, and Dol Lime.
I want to use... alfalfa meal + soft rock phosphate

Will my plants be healthy with only alfalfa meal + rock phosphate? And if they will be, how much cups should i use per sq ft if anyone knows. thanks.

I'm basically doing the same thing....I think the soft rock phosphate is extremely slow release and you won't really see any benefits in the first year or so. its good if your outdoors or indoors and reusing your soil.. You may need to supplement P in the meantime.

for N i used alfalfa meal at 1 cup per cubic ft and things seems to be going good.

I'm a new grower so.....remember that :rasta:

word up. what do u use for P then?

i use indonesian bat guano (0.5-12-0.2) I use that at 1 cup per cubic ft also. That is less than what most recipes say to use but that is my starting point. I'll add more next time if needed.
